Monday can't get here soon enough.

Just wondering what would be considered the greater accomplishment --- Winning the World Cup this cycle or the "Miracle on Ice" Gold? I would tend to say winning the World Cup, but considering the make-up of that hockey team and the caliber of teams that they had to overcome, I'm not so sure.

Winning the World Cup is the single greatest accomplishment a country can achieve, outside of winning two straight World Wars.

I think the Miricale on Ice was amazing, but WC without a doubt. For Miricale there was Russia and a couple other teams. For the WC there are at least 8 teams who have a legit shot at winning. And so many more countries participate. It's such a bigger deal, IMO

Perhaps as a "1b" question, I should have asked which of the 2 achievements is "more difficult"?

Winning the World Cup

The whole world would shudder and knock the planet irreversibly out of it´s actual orbit.

The jubilation in the USA would further serve to realign said new orbit to an even more skewed pattern.

With that in mind, the magnitude of us winning a World Cup in 2014 is just hard to comprehend.

I can't even begin to fathom the explosion that would happen when the US wins the World Cup. I don't even mean this one. Just any one. There are so few teams who have ever done it that to imagine the US doing it...I just can't. I think I would spontaneously combust.

Exactly. Winning the World Cup would be the greater accomplishment. Many more teams to overcome than the us hockey team.

Just a side note --- projected high temp in Natal on Monday is 94 degrees. 0% Chance of rain.

Jesús, what´s that, about 36 C?

Spain´s been fricked over by Brazil. They´re training now at a a comfortable 14-15 C (I´m guessing this is low to mid 70´s), then must go play the Netherlands in fricking African heat.

But we actually have a professional soccer team.

The Soviets were BY FAR - the greatest hockey team on the planet...they had won the last 4 Olympics...

They had beaten the NHL All-Stars 6-0.

Winning the World Cup to be equivalent to 1980 would be like the USA sending...the University of Portland, Santa Barbara and UCLA kids to go play Brazil and win (if Brazil had won the World Cup the last 4 times and were reigning 20 year champs...and if Brazil had demolished the 2nd best team (Germany) each World Cup 6 to nil.)

I think the Miracle on Ice was the greater accomplishment given the team and that time period. So for a specific team during a specific competition that was truly incredible.

The US team this year has flirted with the FIFA top 10.

Now in the general perspective of sport world wide, there is nothing greater than winning a World Cup. Just nothing comes close.

I think is the gold standard for body temp in Spain.

ETA I´m wrong, that´s for kids. An adult should be around 37. You are correct, kind sir.

it's the World Cup just stop. The talent gap between that ussr team and the USA team is no bigger than the talent gap between the USA and at least 8 or 9 teams in this wc. Plus there's like 10 countries who really do hockey, there at least 60+ that really do soccer.

Plus we'd won gold 20 years before and silver 8 years before. We were an established hockey power. If you want to argue it meant more bc of the political climate sure, but as pure sporting accomplishment it's the WC by a mile

It wouldn´t even be close. The dearth between 10 and 1 is abysmal.

Think basketball world championship, Spain 2 and USA 1, and the difference in them.....

If you can grasp this, you´ll understand that the miracle on ice would pale in comparison.

No sir, not true. I dont think you really understand the background of the 1980 olympic hockey tourney.

It just depends on the team and its talent level. Who is going to argue that the World Cup isnt, in general, more of an accomplishment than winning gold in hockey. That wasnt the question though.
