WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives unanimously approved legislation Tuesday to make it easier for patients enduring long waits for care at Veterans Affairs facilities to get VA-paid treatment from local doctors.
The Senate was poised to vote on a similar bill within 48 hours, said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
The legislation followed a Veterans Affairs Department audit showing that more than 57,000 new applicants for care have had to wait at least three months for initial appointments and an additional 64,000 newly enrolled veterans who requested appointments never got them.

Just out of curiosity because I really don't know... Do Veterans not have Medicare or Medicaid through the govt?
Why were they forced to go to the VA?

My father-in-law that passed away last year had VA insurance only. He had no premiums with VA where he would have with Medicare.

Ok, so theres a separate form of insurance for veterans that is 100% covered by the govt. I always wondered how it was done.
Now the real question comes down to at what % are the doctors/hospitals who treat VA patients going to be reimbursed?

I forgot to mention that he was a POW during the Korean "conflict". I think POWs get more coverage than the others. There's probably more to the qualifications for VA coverage that what I have stated. My wife is kind of the expert on the subject around my house.

But again, I am wondering what the reimbursement percentages will be if these VA Patients go to a regular doctor? Will it be along the lines of Medicare, which all of the doctors say isn't nearly enough? Will it be along the lines of regular insurance?
Secondly, is there anything in this law forcing doctors to take these patients? I seriously doubt a doc would turn away a veteran from care, but wondering if we will be seeing the future of healthcare... Docs forced to accept certain insurance.
