It's worth a watch IMO. They use the scenery of New Orleans better than any TV show I can remember. It is a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries so you have references to that show from time to time.

No I don't think so. They do a pretty good job of explaining everything

No the first couple episodes do a good job of weaving in the vampire mythos of the universe naturally into the plot.
