outboard motor issues (50hp mercury)

I have a 95 model Mercury 50 that aint pissing. They guy that gave it to me says it was late time he ran it. I imagine dirt daubers have made a colony in there. The fitting where the hose attaches was clogged up and i pushed weedeater string in trying to unclog it but think i just jammed more dirt deeper in.
Can i pull the lower unit off and go in the other way and get everything out?
If I do that ill probably put in a new water pump and seals while im in there. I did it on a 40 Suzuki about 10 years ago so it should be that hard.
Any tips or suggestions? Tia

I used to have on of those. Called it my welfare motor cause it was black and wouldn't work.

Take it apart, clean all parts really well. And use parts for trot line weights

I used to keep a few of those little yellow flag marker wires in the back of the boat for backwater trips.
yammahammers have little piss holes.
I guess that figures.

Sadly, it's getting to where I know just as many whites like that too. Messicans are getting to be the backbone of this country when it comes to work.

Did you run it in the water or with the muffs?

I don't get all the Mercury hate here.
Drop the lower unit, try to blow the hose clean and put a new water impellar in it. She'll spit good until the next time you suck too much trash up in there.
I avoid running mine in thick stuff, I'll use the trolling motor to get out to open water before starting my big motor.
