Thought it was a bad battery.. Changed it out two days ago... Drove home and back to work.. Then get in to drive back home and all lights and everything start going dim and stop working... Its an 05 ford focus... Thanks for any input!

Sounds like your battery cable is a piece of shite.

Just to clarify... did you change the battery or the alternator?

Changed it the battery.. It was almost 5 years old...

Like I said. I drove from Avondale to Gonzales and back to Avondale... It sat for a day and a half while I was working.. Then I crank it up turn on my lights and it ran for almost a mile before the guages started going dim and then they went out

Sounds like your terminals aren't tight. Tighten up your cables and see if that does it.

Hmm.. Even though it did the same thing with the old battery and then changed it out and tightened everything up then... Seems like it would have messed up from the beginning ad soon as I put it in there instead of making two trips.. The thing is tough.. I didn't run anything on the first Trips because I wasn't sure if it was the battery or alternator.. Tonight was the first time I turned anything on as far as lights or radio..

Well have your alternator tested. If everything is snugged up and your battery is new (and that is good because nobody needs a 5 year old battery) then your alternator might not be charging.

what kind of shop did you take it to?

I didn't.. I need recommendations if someone knows of one close to Avondale... I'm getting someone to bring me home tonight but I'm gonna have to go back down there tomorrow and either work on it my self (lol) or somehow get it to a mechanic.. Don't really want to bring it to a dealership though.. If I have to I will...

Well friend, I can't give you a recommendation for that part of the world, but from what you are telling me any auto shop should be able to figure it out relatively inexpensively.

can you see your alternator? Can you reach it? if yes to these two question and you have a basic socket set, more than likely you can change it yourself in about 10 minutes.

Seriously usually 2 main bolts, maybe a third for the for ground or positive wire and a quick connect plug

Last time my alternator went out I found some dude in the parking lot of Auto Zone, paid him 40 bucks and he changed it in the parking lot.

Go YouTube that buddy...more than just two bolts from what I saw and they said I needed a socket that flexed...to me that's not basic...not sure though because I'm not a mechanic...

fair enough, but you would have answered no to my two questions. which is why I asked.

FWIW a flex adapter is just a few bucks

Yeah..I can't see it..gotta move the washer fluid and brake fluid containers out of the way and then a few other things...the YouTube video made it look a little complicated for me...I changed one before in a Nissan hard body pickup but..it was easier to get to...

You forgot the step where you remove the motor mount bolt and move the engine to get the alternator out

Those flexy sockets do take the level of difficulty from a 1 to at least a 3.

It's an easy fix man. Youtube it and you should be able to do it yourself. You will have to pull back on the tension pulley to break the tension off the belt that will allow you to work on and remove the alternator. Of course first remove your cables off of your battery so you don't accidentally shock yourself. Then get your socket set and see which ones fit your alternator bolts. It's usually only two or three bolts. Bring it to autozone they should give you some credit for bringing in the old one because they rebuild them. Just buy a remanufactured alternator they are cheap and will last for as long as that car will last as long as you don't run your battery dead a bunch.

I've YouTube it already..I'm not very mechanical so to me it seems pretty difficult..but that's just me..Probably just going to use my roadside assistance and get it brought to a dealership and just get it done with...I hate things like this..
