Who Cares About MLB Draft? Barely Anybody (MLB Rant)

Of the three major sports, MLB has the screwiest setup of farm system and draft.
You draft a player then pretty much shelve him for 4-6 years. I don't understand this concept, considering other sports draft picks see playing time immediately. If you're drafting a kid #1 overall and as bad as the Astros, I don't understand sending the kid around on a circuit tour for years accomplishes.
Seems like pro baseball is the absolute worst sport to follow. How anybody gets excited about this sport is beyond me. Who even attends these farm system games? Why do prospects need 4 years to develop. It seems to me ifyou're good at the sport, you're good. Why are they not playing in the league right away? You're telling me the 5th starter is worthy of a rotation spot over the 1st overall pick? Seems ridiculous.

Cubs, Rays, Phillies and Dbacks are all worse than the Astros. The More you know.

Yeah what could go wrong? Lets throw a 17 year old into the fire. Whats the difference in high school kids with metal bats and mlb hitters with wooden bats?

They play in the minors until they're good enough for the majors. Sometimes it's immediate, often it's not. It isn't a hard concept to understand.

NBA players for the most part are so freakishly athletic that they know who is going to league by 17 years old.
NFL has free minor league in college football
it is completely different

It is for the simpletons.

This is either a troll or you know nothing about MLB. Absolutely nothing about baseball. A 18 year old kid would be a failure if you put him into the big leagues right away. You don't seem to understand that baseball requires skill and experience and that takes time to develop. Baseball is not like football where brute strength or speed or size can be immediately utilized.

So the kid isn't good enough to compete but we will draft him for what he might do when he grows up. Seems absurd.

I'm going to guess that baseball is more of a game of skill than the other sports.
Therefore, it takes longer to refine your game.
And you aren't going to be in the minors for 4-6 years unless you were 17 and drafted out of high school.

Not really. Kids are drafted on potential. Joe Mauer turned down a scholarship from Florida State to sign with the Minnesota Twins and played in the minors for about four years. He has won two batting titles. Miguel Cabrera was signed out a teenager and played in the minors for a few years.
Baseball wants to oversee the development of its players early on.

So what is the point of college baseball. The best kids probably aren't playing the sport is what you're telling me.

Greg Maddux spent 4 years in the minors with a 2.86 ERA. His first two seasons in the majors he had a 5.59 ERA.
Mike Trout was a .342 hitter in the minor leagues and hit .220 after his first call up.

The best guys don't go to college baseball for the most part. A lot of MLB teams will pay a premium because they rather have players develop in their farm system. Something I think you are going to start to see with NBA D-league

I've been to 1000+ minor league games in my life. They are fun, cheap entertainment if you like baseball

Just because you don't understand baseball doesn't mean it sucks.
Posted on 6/7/14 at 1:02 pm to TigerStripes06
No, I would argue the system isn't conducive to the fan experience at college, semi pro or pro ball.

Is this supposed to be serious?
