If Latinos vote for him just because of his new Latino name then doesn't that mean they are racists?

I would think you'd want to do it a few years in advance for it to actually work but we'll see

Former LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa changed his name.

He went by Tony Villar previously.

How many times do we have to ask thus question?

Only white people are racist.

Just answer the question

Hell no it doesn't make them racists. Being for a particular candidate does not mean you are against another, but certain ethnic groups have a tendency to stick together. Its called familiarity. Irish in Boston may vote for an Irishman who is running against a person of German descent. Doesn't mean they hate Germans.

Now, if the motivation is such that a Latino won't vote for a white person simply because he is white, then that is racist.

Well said. Every Black person I know has no problem voting for White folks, they've voted for them in the past and will vote for them in the future. The reminds me of Chris Matthews admitting that when he was younger, if there was an Irish-Catholic running for office, he voted for him regardless of who the other candidate was and what he stood for.

The word "Latino" does not denote any particular race. There are white, black, and native Latinos... A large percentage of them are of mixed heritage (majority of Mexico).

The definition of racism is:

the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Finding "familiarity" with someone because they are the same race with you would be an example of racism. Their race has not that much to do with their personality. It is an assumption based on race and not based on any action or belief the person holds.

Not all Latinos are white but since some are white then why are non-white Latinos upset that he changed his name to Ceser Chavez?

After all, he may still be a Latino.

Are the non-white Latinos who will only vote for a non-white Latino racists?

BTW , here's the 28 categories o Latinos tabulated in the 2000 United States Census:

quote:

Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican Republic; Central American: Costa Rican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Nicaraguan, Panamanian, Salvadoran, Other Central American; South American: Argentinian, Bolivian, Chilean, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Uruguayan, Venezuelan, Other South American; Other Hispanic or Latino: Spaniard, Spanish, Spanish American, All other Hispanic or Latino.
