Long story short, my family used to have a camp in Grand Isle from the time I was a kid, all the way to Katrina. All my life, the only fishing I knew was specks and red fishing. For years since then, my dad has been kinda crushed and completely lost all heart to fish anything.

He and my mom recently bought a camp on the Diversion to watch the grandkids grow up, etc. He asked me and my brother to go fish this weekend, and naturally we're excited about it. The only thing is that I know nothing about freshwater. I recommended we roll out to Pontchartrain to fish salt but he said he didn't feel like doing that yet. So this is gonna be an education for really all of us.

Where's the good spots for action around Blind River, Amite, etc? Kinda especially for newbs? My goal is to ultimately work up to at least some decent brackish stuff but I'm excited to really do anything at this point.

Thoughts?

The water is going to be pretty terrible. I believe the rivers have been closed since that big rain. I would suggest going somewhere else this weekend.

I've had moderate success on the diversion during the middle of the week, when no boats are out.

The water just came back in the banks last night on the Diversion, catfish might be your best bet and that might not be great. We have had a fish kill every couple of years that has really hurt the fishing. Katrina, Gustov, Issac...

ETA: The rivers just opened last night after being closed for over a week...

I've been catching pretty good in my backyard at night under the lights. Nothing to write home about though.

I'd look for another river this weekend.

If you are going to fish the area for bass, Then I'd suggest either fishing the Lake Maurepas shoreline just to the right of the mouth of blind river. Be careful, it's extremely shallow in places there. Worms, frogs or lizards in the lilly pads and trees rigged weedless.

Another option is to hit Chene Blanc. If you head toward Blind River, about 3-500 yards after you get out of Diversion Canal, there will be a bayou to the left. Head down that bayou until it tees off. That's Chene Blanc. There's a couple of Oil Well Canals in that area that produce decently, as well as just fishing the river itself.

There's also Black Lake down that way that produces decent at times.

Like others have said, the water is not going to be pretty.

We have had nothing but really small sacs and lots of gar, but my light was off for over a year and was only recently turned back on a couple of months ago...

What about female gars. :rimshot:

ETA: Not a big fan of gar balls. Just a matter of preference.

The water will be perfect this weekend. Rolling out the cuts. How can it be better than that?

I'll be running jugs and drinking beer around Manchac this weekend. Gonna take a break and let the kids have some fun.
