Feel good story to start your morning

For those who don't read Dandy Don, I thought this was worth sharing. It was in the reader comments section this morning. I love reading stuff like this. Enjoy.

Reader Comments: Scott, I just wanted to give you a feel good story about my experience at the LSU softball regional in Tucson last month. I’m born and raised in Alabama, live in AZ, but a diehard LSU fan…I know. So when we learned LSU was playing Arizona in the Tucson Regional final, it was a no brainer to head on down (from Tempe). In the 2nd game, my son and I received a home run ball hit by Sahvanna Jaquish. We were more than excited, as expected, until an Arizona official demanded the ball back. After a small discussion… I reluctantly gave it up. Never really thought much more about, since the experience was a memory in itself, until my mom mentioned she got a homerun ball that same weekend in the Tuscaloosa regional. I then told her what happened, which not surprisingly, prompted her to write LSU (not in a mean or want something way, just for an explanation of why her grandson got a ball taken away…) The LSU customer service responded immediately with a personalized email thanking us for attending, apologizing for the incident, and asking for our address. Felt kind of bad as they didn’t do anything wrong and I didn’t want anything out of it but went ahead and gave. Today we received a package addressed to my son from the LSU athletic department. Like a kid on Christmas, we opened it up to find a signed & personally addressed ball to my son from Coach Torina!! You just can’t describe the excitement we felt. As fans we sometimes get so caught up in winning and losing that we forget how awesome the University and the people involved really are. Just thought this story may add a little more Tiger Pride to Tiger Nation!

Why in the hell would they ask for a HR ball back?
Never heard of such nonsense.
ETA: yet something else I dont get about softball.

They give the ball to the parents of the girl who hit the home run. They are trying to do a nice thing for the athletes.

I didnt get that from the post. Did they ask for it or demand it and even explain why?

So, for every home run during the regional, an Arizona marshall retrieves the ball and hunts down the HR hitters parents? That doesn't add up.
What if the parents aren't there?
Nevertheless, I am glad Torina and LSU did a good thing for a fan and the kid!

Hey man, I don't know how it all gets done but I can tell you that's what they do because I watched the WCWS tournament and saw the officials handing the balls to the parents.

I have no idea where the "give the ball to the parents" thing came from.
I have been to enough LSU softball games to know how these things work and I have been to a number of away games too. In most parks, fans have to give the ball back if they catch it. Some places have the marshals give the fan a coupon for something free in exchange for the ball (like some fries at McDonald's or something). At LSU, the fans actually get to keep foul balls and not have to return them on SEC weekends (they do have to return them during midweek games though). Pretty cool promotion, I think.
I am sure Arizona's policy was for all fans to return softballs to the marshals.

That may be just a WCWS thing...it isn't a regular thing (see above post)

Maybe it's just for the tournament. It happened in games across the country, not just AZ. I can't believe I'm getting so much blowback on this. It did happen..... Believe it or not....

I believe you...I actually saw it during one of the WCWS games. It is just not shocking that the Arizona people asked for the ball back since that is normally the standard procedure.

Thank goodness, a witness.

Now back to the story at hand, this is another example of the jewel of a coach we have. Her staff is top notch and they are a fun team to watch. With the new pitcher coming in and the hitting that is returning, we should be able to make a serious bid for a WCWS berth next year.
