Dan Marino suing NFL over concussions

How can a person sue the NFL for concussions after willingly playing a sport and making a living doing something where the risk were clearly known in advance? Is this any different than a 40 year smoker suing the tobacco companies after coming down with cancer?

Marino, a Hall of Famer who starred for the Miami Dolphins for 17 seasons, and 14 other former players filed a civil lawsuit in federal court that says the league knew for years there was a link between concussions and long-term health problems.

I think this is the issue. PBS did a great special on this. The NFL looked a lot like cigarette manufacturers.

but but... they settled this

Who says that? They used to laugh all the time when a player got his bell rung. No one ever talked about potential long term brain damage.

For the lawsuit to really have any merit, they need someone who has the name recognition like Marino. I would imagine many of those filing suit were short timers and looking to cash in and obviously Marino doesn't need the money.
I do wonder if Marino will get any heat from the broadcast company he currently works for if the NFL pushes back.

"I didn't know that my brain slamming into my skull was bad for me!!!!! I want some money to make me feel better!!!!!"
What a goddamn joke.
What a goddamn joke.

Except cigarette companies were not paying high levels of income to compensate for the difficulties of using them. Professional athletes get compensated because their job is difficult and very few can do it.

It's a full contact sport where grown men are hitting each other at top speed. Every pro played ball from youth and endured multiple injuries along the way. It is unimaginable that anyone choosing this sport as a career wouldn't be aware of the long term repercussions of playing such a violent sport?

In the New America no one is responsible for themselves or their actions.

Football is done. It's over.

The rub is Marino and guys like him accepted tons of money for playing, endorsements and promotions for playing the game and gleefully cashed these checks that came from playing football. But now that their careers are over, football is evil! I bet Dan Marino continue to parlay his former football career into big bucks.

No. It isn't. Just the opposite. Like I said it was all a big joke years ago.
Just like doctors used to do Ads saying which cigarette was better for you..
What's unimaginable now was quite the norm in its day.
That's what you are missing.

This is the key issue. IF the risk was clearly known in advance then he is a grown-arse man, made his choices and cashed his checks.
If the risk was NOT clearly know, the next question is, did the the NFL know about this issue and hide it, or prevent action from reducing the damage.
This is going to be a tough call. I think the NFL settles (again).
However, since the risk IS now know, I think future lawsuits from current players are "out of bounds." (sorry)

So you are telling me that a man that plays football from youth and is either injured multiple times or witnesses other injured on the field or locker room had no clue that football would be detrimental to his physical health long term?! What am I missing?!!

I wonder if Dan Marino will ever be featured on another NFL broadcast again?

Had a girlfriend who was a waitress in Miami years ago. Said Marino was notorious in the service industry in that town as a guy who didn't tip.

Bad knees and backs? Sure.
Forgetting how to get home from the corner store at age 45? Not so much
