quote:

s Morgan notes in a fascinating Medium piece on our declining trust in one another: "The percentage of all respondents who said that most people can be trusted dropped from about 46 percent in 1972 to about 32 percent in 2012."
Morgan doesn't attempt to draw a single conclusion for the "why" behind our erosion in trust. And, there's no way a single factor is responsible for such a large societal change. But, he does note that the ubiquity of television, the Internet and smart phones have fueled less direct human interaction and, therefore, perhaps also fueled a lack of willingness to give others the benefit of the doubt.

it has been pretty steady since 96.

ease of access to information destroys the need to trust people and makes it easier to prove them as liars, further destroying trust.

For being the greatest country of all time, living in the most prolific economic era, with the greatest freedoms ever bestowed upon a human populace, we sure seem like a cynical people.

I would guess that has much to do with ignorant interpretations of the state of affairs, driven by our current news media.

I figured the South would have the most trust of other people because everone here treats others like good ol baws.

It must be trust of people your own race down here. Race relations must be why the South never trusted anyone.

1972 is the year of the Watergate break-in. The late 60's onward saw a complete unraveling of American's trust in political, religious, economic, and social leaders. That has trickled down to the general public. The internet just kicked it into overdrive in the mid 90's because people had unprecedented access to previously controlled information after that point.
