Well that's sweet of him.

Does the Spanish monarchy have any real power these days?

Absolutely. They have far more approval than the democratic government. If the new King wanted to run the country like King's of old, the people would probably cheer for him in the streets. The monarchy was essential in getting rid of the Franco dictatorship.

That was a bad time for Spain. On the one hand you had facists, and on the other hand you had communists. Not the most attractive of choices.

Some fringe TV preacher in the eighties was convinced Juan Carlos was the Antichrist. His whole theology hinged on it.

It's pretty much the only reason Spain hasn't split into a bunch of different countries.

Just amazed how historians have glamorized the so called "republicans" and the leftist from this country who joined ranks in the Spainish Civil War...they were nothing more than communist butchers supported by dupes from America who did nothing more the slaughter thousands of innocents (especially priests and nuns) and also looted the treasury of all of Spains wealth accumulated in the 2 previous centuries.

Where in hell did you "learn" history?

General Franco was a fine Christian gentleman and Juan Carlos was his handpicked successor.

Some of it at Louisiana State University. The rest of it on my own.

The Spanish Republicans were Communist scum including the Americans in their George Washington and Abraham Lincoln Brigades. I wish that all of them had been killed so that their descendants would not presently be polluting our national gene pool.

General Franco and the Spanish Nationalists rightfully whipped knots on their heads and thank God they did.

Have you ever even talked to someone that grew up in Spain under Franco's regime. I have a good friend that did and she absolutely idolizes the man.

Franco died? I thought he was still lingering near death.

I visited Spain not long after Franco died.

We had locals taking us through the country.

They all said, for all his faults. Franco gave them a middle class, and arranged for the peaceful transfer of power, by bringing Juan Carlos to the throne, and allowing for democratic elections for a Parliament.

Franco was a rare breed. He held on to keep the Communist from taking over, and then gave the Spanish an opportunity to self-govern.

The monarchy is a figure head, but does give Spain stability.

Well that settles it. I'm sure the 100,000+ Spaniards who were summarily executed and the countless others who had all of their civil liberties stripped agree with your "good friend."

Only on the Poli Talk board will one have a serious discussion about the merits of a murdering dictator, simply because he was anti-communist.

Except that he intended for Juan Carlos to be his successor, not to establish a constitutional monarchy. Even when Juan Carlos took the crown, he had to do so under Franco's restrictive laws that required him to pledge fealty to Movimiento Nacional, the only legal political party at the time of FF's death. It wasn't until the crown was on his head and Franco was long rotting did he have the legitimacy to tell the army and the Francoist right wing that he was going to transition to a democracy.

Beatrix
Albert II
Ratzinger
Juan Carlos

I'll be convinced of the Illuminati's involvement when Elizabeth II abdicates.
