Berghdal Precedent...Trying To Reserve Judgment

Is there any precedent in US history wherein the US has traded multiple high value detainees or prisoners of war for a US soldier that is widely believed to be a defector or deserter?
I have to admit, that I was proud of the President when I heard we traded some GITMO detainees for a POW (though I thought it odd that I had not heard mention of this POW in the past).
Come to find out, the reason you don't hear much about him is because he was widely believed not to really be a POW but instead a deserter.
Then you hear that Obama violated a law he signed into effect by not running this through the proper congressional authorities before making the exchange.
Then you see the tweets from his father.
Then you find out that at least one of the GITMO detainees was considered to be very high value.
Then you consider the timing in view of the VA scandal...
In all honesty (while admitting I am no Obama voter), someone convince me why I should back the president with the flood of new information that has popped up about this ordeal?

Impossible.

I think it is pretty clear that this was done to distract from the VA scandal and GDP decrease
The administration always seems to get the squirrel it needs to distract from issues that could hurt itself politically

"if the winds were to blow in a different way...I'd stand with Islam" (Obama paraphrase).
We are just going to have to gut this one out, DD, and pray that the Progs don't take it to the street when rejected by the electorate.

Please. Based on all of your apocalyptic, hyperbolic ramblings, you'd love it if "the progs took it to the street".
How else is Jesus going to return, right?

Interesting point, Doc.
I really do want to think this was an honest attempt to free a US soldier that was captured against his will...an attempt to save US blood.
It is very hard to do so, though.
