My family and I are expats living in Malaysia. We will be repatriating to Pearland Texas, which is ~ 20 minutes south of Houston .

We are having a difficult time contacting the rental properties we are interested in. We have emailed and left phone messages. We get very few call backs. Is this normal?

No idea, what agency are you using? I suggest looking at HAR, they seem to be pretty good at real estate.

It's aggravating as heck. We need an address for the moving company and wanted to locate a property prior to our arrival. The clock is ticking.

Should I start bugging people?

We haven't used an agency just calling homes listed on various web sites. Maybe we should go through an agency.

As far as Muslim, we typically lead the message with we are from Louisiana. Lol

are you really suprised that they won't return a call from malaysia inquiring about renting an apartment?....might as well say you are a prince in nigeria and have some money for them...

We're calling from our Louisiana number via Vonage. There have been a few emails returned but then they go cold.

Probably need to call Federal Fair Housing. They might think you are Muslim. Need to get the Government involved in this and they can get the rent reduced too.

Real estate and rentals are going really quickly in the Houston area right now, it's probably just that they are getting a bunch of calls and the first one to show up with a deposit gets it.

That's what most white landlords say.

A guy I worked with was looking in Katy and recently made offers on 5 different houses at the asking price before offering above asking for the 6th and getting it. People I talk to who are looking for rentals are having a similar experience, and most of them are white professionals.

The rental market is tightening up for all people.

Fewer spec houses. Harder to get loans. Fewer new construction projects. And many industrial oil and gas jobs. Good to be a landlord in Houston.
