My woman's laptop is basically useless as a laptop now. Battery and charging port are both fricked, and it randomly goes to BSOD when it is taken off of the charger for any amount of time. Pointless for her to bring it to school, but she now has it plugged in to her TV via HDMI, and uses a wireless keyboard/mouse when she needs to do something. Touching the thing is dangerous. It is also ~5 years old, but still works okay.

Her bday is coming up, and I have been looking around at 2-in-1 convertible computers, and think I have settled on this one Thinkpad Yoga. I can get it for ~$850 with some discounts. It would be nice to find one with the digitizer/pen included, but I haven't been able to for that price. She will probably get external optical and storage drives for other stuff, which are both cheap

Specs are:
i5-4200U
4GB DDR3
128GB SSD
Win 8.1

I have looked around for them locally, but haven't had any luck. Only thing similar that I have seen is the Ideapad Yoga, and it just feels like a flimsy POS. The tablet slash ultrabook is incredibly usefull, and would be the only reason I would get something with Win 8. I messed with it, and was pretty impressed with the system itself.

Before biting the bullet, I wanted to ask the newly formed TB if any of you have or have played with one? The only negative I have read was about the trackpad(which I found no problem with), and the Wifi drivers needing to be updated a bunch to keep it from dropping certain routers. Even with the Wifi problem though, it seems to only happen on a few different routers.

I went to a Microsoft/Intel convention about 8 months ago and we were comparing internals of various brands. Lenovo was hands down the best. do it. FWIW, I have two as well

Everything about it seems to be on the up and up, but I am just not sure about buying something for $850 I haven't put my hands on

Go to Best Buy and put your hands on it then. I purchased/evaluated one for a coworker and it's a really nice machine. I've also seen multiple articles this week talking about other companies copying the design.

I bought one for my wife and she loves it. She uses it just about everyday. I thought that we may not use the "yoga" features often but it comes in handy more than I thought.

i have the ideapad and love it. best laptop i've ever had and i'm including MBP and MBAirs in that.

my boss got the yoga and aside from having to teach him windows 8, he's loved it.

Lenovo is IMHO the best machine maker out there.

I guess I am gonna pull the trigger then. The regular think pad laptops are top notch, and the Idea pad Yoga's performance was good

Only problem is that I am probably gonna want one now

ThinkPads are good machines. I'm an Apple fanboy but at work I use think pads and have gotten the company to standardize on them. I've always had better experiences with them compared to HPs Asus and Dell

I bought the IdeaPad Yoga for home and have the Thinkpad version at work.

The Thinkpad version is a little smaller so it "feels" heavier and sturdier. The keys also lock into place when you flip it into the tablet mode.

Both have run great for me. I also like the X1 Carbon if you don't need the tablet mode.
