Aside from the normal BR vs Nola thread, lets shift our focus to two mid size cities in the South, Memphis, TN vs. Birmingham, AL. Lets hear your thoughts and opinions.

If you were forced to move to either Memphis or Birmingham, where would you go and why?

I've lived in both and while it is closer than some might think it's Birmingham.

ETA: Birmingham just has so many different areas to live with different things to do. Definitely a city on the upswing

Birmingham for me.

I lived in Bham for 2 and a half years but have only visited memphis. So sure my opinion is probably biased, but I mean all I have to go on is my own experiences right?

Memphis has Beale street and some of the surrounding areas (I think called germantown maybe?) which are cool, but I mean other than that it doesn't seem like there's much there.

Birmingham has a nice little restaurant/bar area in Lakeview, has hiking, good golf, etc. It just seems like there's more to do, I suppose. Also the areas around Bham (hoover, vestavia, mountain brook, etc) are all pretty nice.

Grew up in Memphis as a kid and have only driven through B-ham a few times but I'll give the nod to B-ham since no place is worse than Memphis.

Again, my personal experience with memphis has only been brief..but if young and single I'd say Birmingham. There are shite ton of young professionals in bham and a lot of areas that cater to them.

birmingham b/c i have family there and it's closer to where i grew up... but i've enjoyed the little time i've spent in memphis.

memphis also has a pro sports team, which is cool... even though they're a disfunctional mess right now.

Memphis is a terrible place. B'ham is actually pretty nice on the whole - however its government is grossly irresponsible and rife with graft. See Jefferson County bankruptcy.

Memphis, without question.

Neither. Look for opportunities in Nashville.

What do you base that on?

I'm not saying you're wrong because I haven't lived in both places...but 'without question'? I mean it's not like you're comparing Memphis and San Diego or something.

This.

I grew up 20 minutes outside of Memphis and also spend nearly every Thanksgiving in B-ham, and I'd take Magic City.

Having spent just a little time visiting both, I would chose B'ham. Loved the city layout, topography, and the people were very friendly.

Bham is pretty solid for young professionals. And the suburbs are great for families. I live in mtn brook and while I'm the youngest on my block, I don't mind one bit

Birmingham has the Barons (minor league baseball) and there is a lot of support for them. They've just built a really nice ballpark in downtown Birmingham and have had good crowds on a consistent basis. I know minor league baseball is not the NBA, but there is an excitement and sense of support for the barons that makes Birmingham a great baseball town.

Definitely Memphis

Their populations aren't even comparable

Memphis: ~ 655,000
Birmingham: ~212,000

B'ham is actually pretty nice on the whole -

their stance/actions during the civil rights movement stymied their development for decades, at the time, BHM and ATL were on the same level of shitholiness, but ATL rolled with the changes, flourished and developed a lot more rapidly
