Shawshank Redemption question

Watched a few scenes from Shawshank this evening and had a question. What was that opera singer singing about in the scene where Andy locked the door to play it over the intercom system. Assume it is Itailian...anyone know the subject of the song? Only ask as Red in the movie said he didn't have a clue. Neither do I.
