Memorial Day has just passed and I just wanted to say thank you to all of our men and women who have served bravely in our military. I know war is a divisive topic and my thread today concerns that divisiveness in America. Now, this is just my opinion, and I welcome others' opinions as well. Okay, my general question is, what is the last war that the United States participated in that had our freedom and liberty at stake? In other words, in all the wars the U.S. has fought in since World War II- Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan- do you believe the sovereignty and freedom of our nation was ever part of the cause of fighting in those wars? I know that the attacks on our country on September 11th, 2001 was the precursor to the United States invading Iraq/Afghanistan, but do you think if we had not retaliated, where would our country be today?

My general question is this... Korea and Vietnam were wars fought to battle Communism, and Iraq/Afghanistan are being fought to battle terrorism/despotism, but with the mass losses of our men and women in those wars, and the vast protests against those wars in our country, did us fighting in those wars have any bearing on our country's fate, good or bad? When is a war "worth it" to fight in?

And just to clarify, no matter what, I have tremendous respect and admiration for every man and woman who have served their country honorably in every war our country has participated in. To walk into a war zone facing death or serious injury to fight for your country is one of the most courageous things a human being can possibly do.

Obviously depends on the situation. You'll always get screamers from both sides of the equation about whether or not it was "worth it". I think it's a relative term......relative to who you are asking.

Our company does quite a bit of business with Iraq and every now and then I'll be speaking with a new Iraqi on the phone and I'll ask them generally if the quality of life is better now or under Saddam. Almost always they will say it is better now despite the warring factions. New infrastructure, better country governance, updated schools etc etc. Of course, if you ask Joe Terrorist, he would not agree.

Most definitely agree, one positive about the Iraq War that no one can deny is that the United States removed a tyrant from power who had terrorized the Iraqi people for years. The main controversy with the Iraq War was that we invaded because Saddam was harboring nuclear weapons, and the official report is that none were ever found. Still, he was a dictator and his days were numbered.
