DISCLAIMER: I'm pro 2nd Amendment. I believe Americans should have the right to bear arms. I'm not in favor of gun control.

That being said, would your view on gun control change if your spouse or one of your children were murdered? Specifically, what if your loved ones were murdered by a mentally disturbed individual who was allowed to purchase a gun without issue?

I imagine my opinion on gun ownership would be seriously challenged if my spouse and/or children were killed.

Would I become anti-guns? I don't think so. I understand why we have the right to bear arms and I believe I would continue to understand the importance of the 2nd Amendment.

However, I imagine that I would be in favor of stiff gun restrictions if I was personally affected by a gun tragedy.

Of course your opinion would change. But you have to realize that emotion is the driving force to your beliefs at that point. Emotion and reason don't coexist very well.

hypotheticals are pretty hard to answer honestly.

I would say that I doubt it would change my opinion but until such time as that happens (or preferrably doesn't happen), I dont know

I am pro sensible gun control, i.e. background checks and short waiting periods.

??? The gun didn't kill your loved one. The killer did.

No. However, I reserve judgment on those folks affected by a tragedy who lash out against the people who didn't do it (or the guns themselves).

I do not reserve judgment for those who seek to directly exploit those tragedies for political gain.

You might as well how I feel about car ownership if some drunk hits my family.

Sure. Some low intellect types might answer that incorrectly. For the rest of us, meh.

When my car was broken in to and all the Xmas presents stolen from my trunk, I would've been for the death penalty for the fricktard who did it.

There's a reason they don't ask the victims to determine legislation.

My opinion wouldn't change. No legislation would have stopped the hypothetical you described. Unless we found some of those pre-cog things from Minority Report...

I would not blame an inanimate object. I would blame the person.

yeah, yeah, yeah...I understand that argument. I've used it many times myself.

Would you continue to say that if your wife or children were murdered?

Before you answer, take a moment to think about it.

Probably not. The thought wouldn't even be on my mind. I'd probably support gun laws less considering that revenge would be on my mind.

I have already thought about it. The difficult thing would be able to forgive the killer, but I'd have to do that for my own peace of mind.

Background checks and waiting periods do not and will not stop criminals from getting guns. And that is something the left does not realize.

No, i would be wondering why that lunatic hadn't been locked up in an insane asylum. I have a Tendency to assign blame to those responsible, not their tools.

I bet all those families of people killed in Oklahoma City are against the use of bombs.

You know, because a bomb killed them, not Timothy Mcveigh...

If my loved ones weren't armed (say because they were following the law and were in a mall where even the killer isn't supposed to have a firearm), then I would be pissed at the law(s) that kept my family from protecting themselves while empowering any asshat that ignores the law got to kill them at his/her leisure.

I'm not married and I don't have kids, so I have no clue, but my cousin was recently murderer by her husband who killed himself as well. I blame him not the gun. My opinion on gun control hasn't changed a bit.

No. It didn't change when my grandmother was a victim of an extremely violent attack with a garden tool that put the guy away for 25 yrs. I don't blame the tool. I blame the guy.
