2013 Run Defense - 143.2 YPG

That's the highest YPG average since 1999 (152.3).

Rushing Yards Allowed in 2013 Losses

Georgia - 196

Ole Miss - 176

Alabama - 193

Basically, we have no where to go but up from last year.

The DL this year will be better by default IMHO. Our DL last year under-performed. This year I expect much better LB's and an already good secondary gets better with experience.

Do you want to explain what you mean by this?

This is the key to the season. Lacouture is the only DT that is proven. MJ probably will not play. Thomas has been ok and nothing special. The rest are VERY young.

Johnson didn't perform up to expectations last year, but Ferguson played well.

This year's DT could be worse. I hope not, but it could be.

Correct. By LSU and Chavis standards it had issues. But it was good enough to be 3rd in the SEC and 36th nationally.

On the negative side, when it was critical we didn't seem to be able to get it done.

Improved? Yes, I think so. Got some hungry and talented kids going to rotating in and out with some experience. Seems like when our DL is at it's best is when they come out of nowhere.

Breaux Bridge is gonna save the day. Our whole front 7 unit will be a lot better. We have a lot more bodies in rotation and a lot more raw talent and experience upfront. The ability to stay fresh, plus fresh bodies and our DT will have years in the system plus veteran DE. We'll survive. Can't wait to see our exotic blitz packages too since we'll be DBU2014.

Yes it was. It was respectable by the end of the year, but for the first seven or eight games good running teams simply rammed it down our throats.

I think it will be better. AJ was soft, and we had no one with experience with which to replace him. You could have plugged QT in, but AJ would have just taken his snaps, so not much difference. Our fourth was Lacouture, a freshman. In order to be great against the run you need four mature, experienced warriors in the middle; last year we had one. This year? Lacouture and QT give you two. Can Heron, Gilmore and Bain do the rest?

I don't know if that's definitely the case. You're replacing a guy who was a 2nd round pick in Ego and, though he underperformed, a guy with experience in Johnson. Hopefully the 2013 DL class has matured physically and this will be a bit like 2010 & 2011 when you saw several young player really come into their own.

I'll say it 50 times until kickoff. If the DL is back to "LSU's standard" then this team will have a chance to win every game. If not, 4-5 losses isn't out of the question. IMO, the DL is the key to the season. If your DL is solid, your LBs and DBs automatically become better players.

I missed this when I posted, but this is a good point. The back seven will be a lot better, too.

Hopefully we can rely on some of these young, unproven guys to emerge and provide depth so we can get a rotation going. Gotta keep them fresh like in years past.

Also, factor in that LSU played against some outstanding o-linemen last year.

I think the competition takes a short step back this year.

Q Thomas played with great pad level in the bowl game. I think he continues to play well in '14. Improved LB play will make a big difference.

When the '14 season is over, the final stats will reflect more on the offense's productivity than anything else. This D does not have the combination of talent and experience to dominate without an offense that can put pressure on the opponent and force them to gamble. The '11 team had that ability. Don't look for the same type of dominance out of any other LSU squad, perhaps ever. But if LSU's offense can dictate the opponent's game plan to be pass-happy, the shootouts of last season will become blowouts this season.

As I said before, we can only go up from where we were a year ago. We have a lot more good talent on the DL this year, it's just unproven at this point. I don't think that will be the case by the end of the year.

Those youngsters will be a lot more hungry to prove themselves than was the case with our rotation last year.

We will improve on the DL. Our LB corps will be nasty, deep, and talented. Our secondary will even better with experience and the addition of new talent.

This defense will be crazy good by the end of the year.

Chavis lost 8 player to the draft in 2013 for crying out loud! There should be an asterisk with that footnote next to any 2014 defensive stat. Some of you amaze me with the expectations you place on our coaching staff!

Its called not having a good middle linebacker. DTs should eat up blockers and the linebackers should be able to stop the running backs.

I shouldnt put it all on the middle linebacker, the others under-performed as well

I really like the move of Kendell Beckwith to MLB. He's got raw power that we lacked there last year. Welter just wasn't real physical, and wasn't a powerful or explosive tackler.

Ronnie Feist also brings some size and strength to the LB corps. And those fast juniors on the outside should be improved.

I'm curious who the 3rd DE will be behind Hunter and Rasco.

Auburn had a lot to do with that average. That's what their game is. Run first. Those teams will get rushing yards on anyone and they proved when a team is dedicated to the run, they will break some.

I agree that our problem was the DT's got more blame than they should have because even though they weren't great, the LB's couldn't make plays sent to them.
