I've seen several threads about alcoholics on here. Let's talk about the other demon. Who has a gambling problem? And how do you afford it?

I've known a few gambling addicts in my time. Can't stop, even when they win huge. Just aren't satisfied until they are back in the hole.

I had a cousin who lost a good job and pretty much everything he had over his gambling. So he joined the Army, who looked at his training and background and put him in the Finance Corps. He was carrying briefcases of cash around Afghanistan passing bribes out to warlords. I'm sure he skimmed a little off for himself.

<--- Compulsive - Went thru 2 bad series of it. Have lost about 75k in total. Set me back about 5 years in life or so. Damaged friendships. Went thru some counseling and have people I can call when I get the itch now that talk some sense into me.

Addiction problems run in my family. I always knew about the alcoholism and drug use. Ive never done 1 drug in my life and have stayed on top of my drinking to make sure I never get addicted. No one talked about gambling in my family with me and I never knew my grandfathers history with it until it was to late.

I wish people in my family would have been more open about it, would have saved me alot of trouble in life had I never played one hand of blackjack.

Aren't addictions (outside of chemical addictions) more mental than anything? That's not something that can be passed down from one generation to the next.

I go to Harrah's about once a quarter and usually lose my arse…lost 2,500 once….most I ever won was 3,500…i usually lose between 500-1000 when I go

so yeah I wouldn't call going once every 2-4 months a problem, but I definitely spend too much money there

Absolutely.

I've never done 1 single drug in my life due to the fact I lost 2 uncles and an aunt to drug addiction.

I'm not a scientist, but from personal experience I think addictive personality is hereditary. (may just prove your point that its a mental thing)

I know from my own personal stuff, my problems are compulsion and high stress levels. I'll never take a job with high stress levels ever again. I know what to look out for now to see the signs of problems coming on.

Personality is not inherited, although one can inherit things that influence the development of personality, such as chemical balances (and imbalances), the tendency toward addiction in terms of brain chemistry, and so forth. Personality is strongly influenced -- but not determined -- by those things, and also by environment, especially upbringing and things such as trauma, education and similar early life experiences. None of those things preordains addiction, however. One may discover that one enjoys and craves certain things, such as alcohol, drugs, excitement, etc., but if one does not indulge in them the necessary degree, an addiction is unlikely to develop regardless of predispositions.

It's mostly mental.

I would say I did once several years ago. I bet full-time, trying to make a living from it. Actually won money over the course of the year, but was spending it a lot faster, burning through my savings. I would win big and blow too much, etc.

I never went to GA or anything, but I think I had a problem because I was addicted to the rush, thought about and concentrated on it constantly. At the end of the year when the experiment was over and I had gotten back into my profession, I was still distracted and it was tough stopping for a few months.

It was all betting on sports, and no matter how much I won, I just bet bigger, which shows I was addicted to the rush. Won 26k one night and wasn't satisfied.

I go to vegas and play BJ at casinos now, but it's a casual off andon thing now, whereas for that one year it was totally different.

Wikipedia - addictive personality
quote:

The Minnesota Twin Family Study showed high rates of heritability both of developing the same addiction, such as alcoholism (around 50-70%), or different addictions.[5] For example, if one twin is addicted to cocaine, the other twin has an increased likelihood of being addicted to an opiate.[6]

I would say its a combination of both. You can be predisposed to addictive behavior, but if you dont pull the trigger you can't get addicted obviously. Hence my original comment about wishing I was told about my family's history with gambling problems.

I said passed down to generations. I didn't say twins. Twins are a different animal than most.

Its the example they used. Its says heriditary so I don't think the whole study is on twins.

Corrected it was a twins study.

From your same article

quote:

Although genes play a role in developing addictions, it is important to point out that environment pulls the trigger.[6] Concurrent with the widely accepted diathesis-stress model, if an individual has a predisposition towards developing addictions, this alone will not cause problems. It is encountering a stress in the environment that causes the addiction to manifest. Experience with trauma appears to make someone more prone to addictions, especially “severe childhood stress”.[12] Examples such as physical or sexual abuse, and unpredictable expectations and behavior of parents, increase a person's risk for developing addiction.[1]

Mostly mental since your environment around you and how you cope with it is mental.
