One of the prime options under consideration by the Memphis Grizzlies in the wake of last week's management shakeup and the looming departure of Dave Joerger to the Minnesota Timberwolves is making a run at Jeff Van Gundy to be their coach and run their front office, according to NBA coaching sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Grizzlies have serious interest in trying to convince Van Gundy to serve as coach and team president in a job structure modeled after the new dual role brother Stan Van Gundy has secured with the Detroit Pistons.

The Grizzlies, of course, technically still have a coach, but coaching sources continue to describe Joerger's move to Minnesota to succeed Rick Adelman with the Timberwolves as an inevitability. ESPN.com reported Thursday that the Wolves had made "significant progress" in their bid to hire Joerger away from Memphis, which sources say continued Saturday after Joerger met face-to-face with Wolves owner Glen Taylor.

The Wolves ultimately will have to satisfy Memphis' compensation demands to release Joerger from his contract, but the Grizzlies don't appear to be in a strong position to haggle, with sources insisting that Pera does not want to bring Joerger back next season regardless.

Other names on Memphis' list of potential coach hires, sources say, include Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Alvin Gentry and ESPN analyst George Karl, both of whom interviewed for the post before Joerger's hiring. Sources say Gentry has already interviewed for the job openings in Cleveland Cavaliers and Utah Jazz this month.

I thought he has said he is never going back to coaching but IMO he is 10x the coach his brother is, and also 10x more fin to watch, so I hope he does! Good luck!

Sort of why I can see our owner making a serious push for him. He hired Hollinger largely based off of how much he enjoyed his work at ESPN.

They are in a weird situation where do you hire a GM first to help you make the hire or hire a coach before he knows who his boss is.

The most natural fit is hiring a guy to do both and Van Gundy is really the only viable candidate out there. Plus he's developed a relationship with Hollinger over the years at the Sloan conferences.

Stan is an awful coach. I hated when he was in Miami, he always finds a way to screw it up.

I can't see how JVG would want Memphis unless he and Hollinger are just that tight, and he thinks that the type of control his brother just got would allow him to stand up to (what seems to be) a meddling owner. Seems like more of a gig for an ex-head coach trying to get a new gig (Karl, Gentry, Woodson or Nate McMillan come to mind), or someone desperate to get his first one (like Patrick Ewing).
