Hey man, didn't I hear you say one time that you used to be brothers in law w/Ray Christie (sp) (Fishy Business), that fished out of Spicer's?

A couple of friends were talking, and the subject of guide tipping (specifically a red/speck guide) came up. Did he ever mention to you what he considered a big tip, "expected" tip (to the extent a tip can be expected), a mediocre tip, and a "dude, if times are that hard, or you had that bad at time, just keep your effin money" tip?

What's the board's opinion on this? For argument's sake, say the trip is a $600 trip, not counting anything else (bait, if you used/rented their rods, meals, rooms, etc - strictly $600 to get on the boat and fish)

I usually tip 10-15% based on the trip. If they have to work hard I go more to 15, if it's an easy day of fishing, as low as 10. So somewhere between 60-100 for the price you're looking at.

I know some of the others will pay up to 20%. I will too if we catch a bunch of fish and they clean them for free.

To answer your question about how much is a good tip I'll break it down what a deck hand or captain expects. 10% of the trip total is expected if they did there job 15% if you thought he did an incredible job 20% if it was one of your best trips ever and the whole crew did more than you expected. Very similar to what you would tip at a restaurant

I bait my own hook, net my own fish, and tell some of the best fishing stories around... They should be tipping me

I can't say I've ever discussed it with him, other than the business side and doing it for money is why he retired. He truly loves just to fish, and guiding was taking that away from him. He still goes quite often, but he has not guided in years.

To answer your question, I think %15 is par for the course for a good trip where you catch a limit of trout. Maybe throw your guide a hundred dollar bill on a $600 trip... Mediocre trip maybe $40, and nothing for a skunk.

He's my uncle. He was married to my mom's sister... Ray still lives in West Lake. He is a hell of a fisherman.
