I've used Buddy's and River City before. While both diagnosed the problem the same--a leak in the evaporator unit--both tried to push replacing the entire unit, rather than just installing a new evaporator coil.

Any advice from the rant? I know nothing about HVAC service, but it seems a little excessive to quote $2-3K to replace the whole unit when replacing only the evaporator coil could cost much less.

Thanks, Rant.

I'd use google and my own skill before river city. Beyond that I can't help you.

Try abc heating and electric. I used them to swap out my condenser and evaporator coil. Condenser went out (23 years old) and had to convert to the new freon. The guy did everything he could to save me money.
Definitely recommend them.

Congrats to you for having enough sense not to fall the"just replace it all" policy.

You may have an issue if you still have an old R-22 system. They might not be able to switch out components that are compatible with the new 410A refrigerant. I would look up Southern Man Maintenance. He's a good guy, I'd trust him to be honest.

Why dont you just tell them you dont want a new unit and you want the coil replaced? You are the one who is in the drivers seat for this transaction

A-1 heating and air. They are located in Port Allen, but service all of the Baton Rouge area.

Yup, very obvious that you don't know anything about HVAC, but hey at least you are honest about it
