President Obama plans to announce a Cabinet shuffle next week, asking San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to take the reins at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and moving current Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan to the Office of Management and Budget as its next director, according to Democratic officials familiar with the proposed moves.
Both men have reportedly agreed to the plan, and the White House is expected make the nominations public in the coming days.
Castro, 39, is serving his third two-year term as mayor of the nation's seventh-largest city and earned national attention in 2012 when he gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Ever since, Castro has been considered one of a handful of Democrats who could serve as the party's vice presidential nominee in 2016, especially if Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the Democratic nomination for president.

This obviously shakes things up as far as implications are for 2016. IMO if Castro has any 2016 aspirations, he is taking a risk being associated with the Obama administration if they are transformed into an ineffective lame duck if the GOP takes the senate and maintains the house.

Castro will probably be Clinton's running mate. Although having someone with the last name "Castro" on the ticket might make it difficult for her to win Florida.

Castro is such an Obama fanboy.
Also, can anyone explain how Castro is qualified for this position?

Something about a wise Latino male with rich experiences and that sort of thing.

A fricking mayor!!! This is obviously an attempt to keep trying to turn Texas purple.

There was another rising young Hispanic star who started out as mayor of San Antonio and then was appointed Secretary of HUD. But like a lot of politicians he didn't know how to keep his dick in his pants and he crashed and burned rather spectacularly a few years later. Let's hope Mr. Castro doesn't follow in those footsteps.

Harvard Law, three terms as CEO of a major city. Sorry but he's never been a venture capitalist so he's not on the republican short list.

Running San Antonio like running Dallas is basically a no-show job.

Qualifications obviously don't matter when the current "president" is nothing more than a glorified community organizer who should probably be teaching a course on white privilege at some liberal university.

You'd think Ike was a communist. It's why you're not taken seriously.

If running one of the largest cities in America doesn't qualify you for Housing and Urban Development, I don't know what does.
Cabinet level positions are political appointees; everyone knows that.
The most qualified person is probably a life-long bureaucrat that knows the ins and outs of the department, but he is always doomed to live in the world of red tape.

Well to be fair now, he does have experience spending taxpayer money.

I've watched that dude...he's slick. Got the Obama flair. Almost makes me want to vote for him. Fool me once, shame on me...

Simple
Need to turn Texas blue
Housing projects in red areas

And yes...he's an Obama in training (same with his brother). His big accomplishment was getting a sales tax passed to fund pre-K for certain parts of the city. They've done a great job staying under the radar without accomplishing much of anything. They are typical, slimy, empty suit politicians. One of them should be running for governor....not Wendy Davis. They would actually have a chance.
