Hi y'all! I'm not much of an hunter or a fisherman (I'm fat, lazy, and like to sleep late) so I never really looked at this board much but then I found out that there is a lot of good info here about landscaping and lawn care so I find myself lurking here more and more.

I have a question for Louisiana sportsmen. I recently purchased an older boat and trailer off of craigslist from someone in Mobile, Alabama. The trailer has no registration and no serial numbers. I want to register it in Louisiana but all I have is a Notarized Bill of Sale. I have been told that the State Police will stamp numbers on the trailer but I have also heard horror stories too.

Have any of y'all had this experience and does anyone have suggestios as to how to get this trailer registered in Louisiana as cheaply and painleessly as possible?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the OB!!

You could possible register it as a home-made trailer. I've done this with trailers and boats that we've built in the past.

Is it a home made trailer? If not, you are going to catch hell.

This is exactly what I am afraid of!

To OldSouth- I have not registered the boat yet. Does that make any difference?

To TexasTiger01- Thanks for the welcome!

I actually think someone posted up the other day about a new rule for homemade trailers. If the trailer is considered homemade, you have to have the receipt for the axle from an axle dealer

No, and I may be wrong, but I think the boat registration will be a bigger pain than the trailer.

Prob not. Shouldnt be bad. The trailer though, if it was me, I would take it to a local trailer shop, ask them to sand it and put a rough coat of paint on it and to make the receipt out for a used axle instead of said work. Then go register it as a homemade trailer.
