Just starting to get into the hobby. I've been to Churchills and Don Juan's. Any other good ones in town? Which one is the best in yall's opinion?

Are you cutting or punching? If you have never tried using a punch I highly recommend it. I never cut my cigars anymore.

Only smoked a few cigars and they've all been cut. What makes punching better than a cut cigar?

It makes a little hole and keeps from getting tobacco in your mouth, helps you savor the flavor, and makes the experience overall a lot better by making a nice easy draw on the cigar. It's hard to explain really you just have to try it out to experience it. The guys at the cigar shop will have one you can try and show you how to use it.

Does this make the draw too hard though? The hole looks way smaller than what you would find on a cut cigar.

No it's real smooth and easy. My father in law showed me a few months ago and I haven't cut one since. Most people I show that to tell me that they enjoy the punch more as well.

I'll give it a try this evening when I get off work. What cigar shop would you recommend I go to?

I don't smoke cigars, but supposedly the one on Perkins and College in the shopping center between Red Zeppelin and Walgreens is good.

+1 for punching and if you have a cigar that's tough to pull you already have the hole to run a rod through.

Habana Port. Great place. They carry a lot of cigars that the other places around do not. Lots of boutique brands rather than the mainstream stuff. They're very helpful people as well.

It's a rare occasion that you'll need to do it, but they make a rod, about the thickness of a coat hanger that you can push through a tight cigar to open it up. In all my years of smoking cigars, I've only had to do it a handful of times. Seems it's always been brands of Gurkhas.

If you are just getting into the hobby, I'd suggest looking online at some of the sampler packs. You can get some really nice cigars for good discounts to see what you like.

Seems like this could potentially mess the cigar up. If I'm mainly smoking cheap <$10 cigars, would the rod be necessary?

Punch is all I use now since it's built into my lighter. Unless I'm smoking a torpedo
