Intent of gun build: shite hits the fan scenario. Ultra reliability. Spare no expense build.

Question: Is there any 100% convincing literature out there that would argue that removing FSB and installing new low profile gas block is just as reliable as just shaving the FSB down? Just ordered my rail system and it's a 13" one, so I'll have to either remove or shave it.

Bapple or any of you other gun nuts have more than just opinion you can link me to to support your argument?

I lean on just shaving it down. It will be nearly visually unnoticeable because of my new rail system anyway, and I've read more forum posts saying that the stock fsb is definitely more tough/rugged. But, as forum nazis go in the AR world, you get people on both sides of the fence with a laundry list of credentials.

For those of you that support a low profile gas block, which make/model do you suggest?

I'm pumped. My first build is nearly done. I knock this install out, get a light and it's functionally complete. All I have left is to decide if or how I will cerakote it!

FYI: Make sure you get the double base one. I didn't and when I removed my FSP, the barrel wasn't finished where the site post was pinned. Had to order the correct one. Damn you RRA

Roger that. Good head's up, there! I think my buddy who is over-seeing me install it prob has a few extra but those can't be cheap. May just order some anyway.

I'm assuming you don't have a pinned and welded flash hider. If you did, I would just cut the fsp down to avoid having to have the FH unpinned and removed then reinstalled. If you have a 16" barrel and normal threaded on FH, I might still consider cutting just the fsp instead of getting a new block. You know your gun runs as-is and it's not a hard modification. The pinned on gas block will be a little bit sturdier compared to the clamp on type.

Honestly, either option works, I figured I would just argue the other side for the sake of it and give a different viewpoint

You won't get the barrel nut on with the fsb (cut down) attached. If you are looking to avoid removing the fsb that won't fly. You will have to remove the fsb, choice is then replace or put back on. I would cut and repin. Then again, you could buy a gas block for cheap too.

Any loss of reliability to re-pin that you're aware of?

Also, while I have you two... any concept of how much it's going to run me to cerakote my lower and part of my upper / maybe my new rail system?

Nah, as long as the gas ports line up and don't move the gun will function. I have several with the low pro with set screws, 556 and 308. I use loctite blue and never have had any issue. I have marked the block and barrel for reference to indicate any moment and have never seen any.

You cant screw it up. You can change either whenever. If you wanna save $40 use the fsb, if not get a low pro block.

I am assuming you bought a ff rail with barrel nut, not just a drop in two piece??

Oh and getting a barrel nut off is a choir...depending on manufacturer. Be sure to use a good vise block to avoid breaking the upper.

On that rail you need need to remove the existing barrel nut. Make sure you use a good non graphite anti seize on the reinstall Moly slide is what you seek.
