The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and Michael Sam's representation announced Friday night that the documentary series that was set to feature the first openly gay NFL player has been postponed.

"After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, 'The Untitled Michael Sam Project' has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dreams of making the team," OWN president Erik Logan said in a statement. "OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best. It's clear that we, along with the world, recognize the opportunity that Michael has in this moment. We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams."

ESPN

Ayo, what's up with this cat though? He says he just wants to be judged as a football player - but then he pulls this stunt.

Rams probably told him and his agent to flush this or his chances for making the team would be nonexistent.

Every single article was negative about this planned show...from ESPN, Deadspin, Yahoo, CNNSI, whatever...

His "handlers" realized they were making him a hated figure with this scripted nonsense and their cause would be lost.

This reversal just shows how cognizant they are of the public and playing to the public and reacting in kind to sell the story they want to sell.

This isn't just about one guy who is gay trying to play in the NFL.

This is a playbook from an entire organization.

The articles from The Advocate, MSNBC, Huntington Post, Democratic Underground, and the NY Times all tested positive

Good, good, good.
They want to do a documentary that airs after the season, with footage of Sam and his boyfriend talking about what he's going through trying to make it in the NFL as an openly gay man...cool. I've read good behind the scenes articles from guys talking about adjusting to NFL life. But a camera crew following him around training camp, not cool at all.

Yep.

There wasn't a team in the NFL that cared about his orientation. I'd bet money that every team in the NFL has already had a gay player and it wasn't a big deal.

Teams didn't want the media circus and the reality show validated those concerns.

You're probably right, but how miserable do people have to be with their own lives for something as little as this to make someone "hated"?

i think it's disrespectful of him to try and cash in on the gay hysteria and gay mafia

he's a pretty decent football player but a terrible fricking human being
