mudlogging on oil rigs

Anybody on here mudlogg on the rigs? What's the experience like, is it worth the money, and what other jobs did you move on to from the oil field experience?

If you've got a good head on your shoulders you should do mwd/lwd.
The pay scale is much higher than mudlogging.
Unless you are a geology enthusiast and that is your thing.

Mud loggers are the lowest life form on a drilling rig. Seriously, if you want to work in the oilfield, find something else.

a lot of mudloggers are grad students in geology looking for some cash or meth heads. The one's that don't quit are kind of squirrely, and they are also the cheapest labor on the rig site. There are some good ones though that really know what they are doing but those are few and far between.

I got my undergrad in geology and grad school isn't an option. It's good pay and good oil field experience to do for a couple years, that's why I asked what other positions can you move on to from starting in mudlogging

All my mud logging experience is 25 years old. I wasn't even sure the job still existed with today's technology .
But yes many of my former coworkers were drunks and idiots and otherwise worthless. But when times are booming you got to get a but in the chair no matter how worthless they are.
I worked with some good folks also.
I was eighteen years old and my old man knew a heavy hitter that many people were willing to kiss his arse for his approval.
You can make some money but you gotta be willing to work long hours.
I'm curious, what does a mud logger make these days?

I think the position is a little more competitive now than for meth heads and drunks. But I'm not saying the exact amount I'll be making but it's comfortably around 60-80

You'll make decent money, work a lot, and be treated like a lesser life form. You may be able to move up to mwd/lwd or mud engineer if you make good connections. The longer you mudlog, the harder it will be fore you to get out of the oilfield.
Why is grad school not an option? Grades?

Have you thought about a geologic technologist role with an operator? Work in an office and help the geos with their job, you show our stuff and you can move up. Also work on your grades and go to grad school.

The only perk to that job is that you'd become a mud engineer after your 3rd month on the job

Yeah, those guys aren't engineers..kind of like how I was called a "field engineer"
