I was bored and scrolling around the internet and found this. At first I thought these were real pictures from Nam until I realized that these guys are posting real after action reports and sticking pictures they take of themselves in the piney woods of America under them. This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. Grown men running around the woods dressed as MACV-SOG Nam vets. Is this a common thing I am unaware of or do you find this as strange as I do?

How is it different from Confederate reenactments?

Yeah I think it's weird as shite. They do this for WW2 as well. I'm not a vet but I think it would be disrespectful and insensitive to people that actually served in these recent wars. Civil War reenactments are a bit different if you ask me.

It is one thing to "bring history to life" especially when you have veterans participating or people really interested in older conflicts.

But this just seems like a game for people who like to play war.

I wouldn't call it common but it's not extremely rare. A lot of those guys travel around the country meeting up with others to do reenactments. They even keep character the whole time that they are there.

That said I find grown men that do that are a little strange.

If I had served in Vietnam and saw my friends blown to pieces, I would scoff at these people that play soldier like they are tough guys because I would know it is nothing to pretend about. Maybe I'm wrong though.

1. I've studied Vietnam for years and I've never seen an American wearing a Pith Helmet. Those were worn by NVA. Anyone ever seen an instance of an American doing something as dumb as wearing an enemy helmet while fighting in a jungle environment where visibility is limited?

2. Everyone loved playing war as kids, guess some never outgrow it. Look at the Civil War reenactors.

I mean, all war reenactors seem weird to me, but saying this is worse just because the actual participants are still around doesn't really strike a chord with me.

So, it is exactly the same as confederate reenactment.

WWI ok, WW2 not ok

SOG apparently wore NVA uniforms when they went into Cambodia and North Vietnam. I actually looked it up after seeing that myself.

How? Reenactments of famous battles are fairly common

Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me. I saw his helmet and immediately went "WTF??? What's he doing with that on his head???".

But if you look at the rest of his uniform, it's American.

ETA: Nevermind, found this in the link....

In this series of pictures you can see the Modern Forces team recreating RT Wyoming on a BDA (Bomb Damage Assessment) mission. BDA is the practice of assessing damage inflicted on a target by an air campaign and was not a popular assignment as you would be dropped in a recently bombed enemy area, with a reception committee a common feature...for this reason the team are wearing a mix of NVA and US issue gear to confuse the enemy in chance encounters.

Haha. I guess what I was trying to say is maybe some wars have happened too recently. You know like maybe they deserve a "too soon" comment. I could be totally wrong, but I guess it's just opinion.

Maybe we should ask some recently returned Iraq War vets how they would feel about me and my couch potato buddies reenacting the Battle of Fallujah in between drinking beer and jerking off.

this guy takes playing a SEAL seriously! He went into a swamp to have the pictures taken by a professional photographer!
