Wife and I are in the process of making a babyMD ( ). For those of you who have taken the plunge into fatherhood, what are some things you would plan ahead for/buy now/start doing? Not in terms of college savings, etc... just short term, now I have to take care of a baby stuff.

And before I get these, having a million in savings and/or don't do it aren't really a viable option...

make sure you have a reliable babysitter that you trust completely...you and your wife are going to need it if only for periodic alone time

Congrats

My commitment to TD trumps all others...haha..I realized when I posted this how that sounded, but I figured I'd let it fly.

I don't remember having to prepare much of anything, except having a few items on hand maybe. Then again, I didn't have much time to prepare anyway.

The only real advice I have that holds is that if you buy cheap diapers, you go through them twice as fast.

Buy good diapers, and buy them online, it's cheap as shite.

Cavewomen did it with only a tit and a club.

Buy diapers, wipes, and formula now - biggest repeat expense
Port-a-crib
Car seat
Stroller
High chair
Baby monitor

Good luck! Are you going to find out if boy/girl? If so, I'd hold off on buying a lot of stuff until you know. Things such as clothes, furniture, even strollers/car seats, your wife will probably want to buy boyish or girlish stuff.

Some things to think about:

1) Is your wife fine with her current lady doctor handling her while she is pregnant?

2) Start looking at hospitals, if you have options. Take a look at your wife's insurance policy, to see how they cover maternity and newborn.

3) Any ideas for a pediatric doctor? I think we had ours nailed down around the halfway mark of the pregnancy.

4) If you are going to do disposable diapers, and you have the space, consider buying a few packs in size 1 now. Not too many though as some babies are allergic to certain ones. Same goes for wipes, bottles, etc.

5) This isn't for now, but for later... take the hospital tour and the classes they offer.

6) Pick up a copy of "What to expect when your wife is expanding". It is a hysterical book that has some good info.

Take the birthing classes with your wife and really pay attention. If she's up for trying it, go natural. She'll be up and on her feet immediately after. All it takes is a good coach.

Go to the doctor visits as much as you can and get to know the doc. It makes the time during delivery that much more comfortable for the three of you.

All the rest of shite falls in line once he's here. The store for whatever you need is right around the corner or two days away through amazon. Concentrate on the birth and getting there.

Father of four and husband to a woman who delivered all of them naturally.
