Why is the NFL so inconsistent with it's punishments?

Ray Rice: Beats his girlfriend unconcious in a casino elevator and drags her out. No league punishment.

Don Jones: Says "Horrible" on Twitter when reacting to Michael Sam footage on TV. Dolphins and NFL trip over themselves releasing statements about how he doesn't represent the league and he gets sent to a re-education camp and suspended from all league activities.

Because there is a lot less money to make on the former.

There is a lot less to make on Ray Rice?

Let's see what the NFL does to Greg Hardy for beating his gf.

I would argue that it is consistent: The NFL only cares when a blunder is committed in public and everyone knows about it.

This is the first time I'm hearing about Ray Rice. Michael Sam on the other hand has been 24/7 news despite being not even in the top 20 defensive players in the draft.

Have to keep with the narrative of popular media, unfortunately. Abusing women was the news of the 1990's.

It's the circumstances and potential consequences.

Don Jones is on a team in the spotlight for bullying and could alienate a large group that could cause problems.

Ray Rice hit his fiance which sadly seems par the course for many NFL players and doesn't have the same news value.

Also, league punishment doesn't happen until a case is finished (i.e. plead out/found guilty or innocent) while a team can act quicker with some actions.

Because pissing off a group of people costs the NFL money and hurts brand growth

If it involves an actual legal matter they usually let that play out before acting.

The idea that the NFL is a crime riddled league is absolutely false. They are way below the populations crime rate and even further below the crime rate for their age group
