Over drinks the other afternoon, a friend and I got to talking about the outrageous birthdate amongst the poor, and how to effectively manage and lower it. The financial burden and the exponential probems this "more kids more money" mindset is crippling the country.

What if we gave each family 10K upfront if they got sterilized, thus ending their ridiculous birth rate. Obviously such families have a more short term thought process, so more would rather the 10K, than have 3 more kids.

Sure, it might cost a lot up front, but the savings down the road would be tremendous. What say the poli board?

A LINK to a study that the birthrate among the poor is significantly higher than the birthrate among the middle class or well-to-do?

Let's see a one time check for 10k or have more children and receive many times that hmmmm...what decision would they make?

You're getting dangerously close to eugenics there. Bribing poor families to self-sterilize.

Though I wouldn't consider myself who you mean when you say "poli board", wouldn't the better solution be to scale down benefits? Maybe down to zero after two kids?

Do I really need to go and find numbers for you Rex? It's common knowledge that the birthrate amongst single women and the poor are much higher than the well to do. It was a simple question based on observation.
Jump off of your high horse. Are you saying that there IS NOT a problem with the birth rate among the poor, and that we should promote smaller families? And besides, it would be 10K in your buddies pocket. All for doing a good deed and not reproducing and bringing another child into a world where it won't be cared for properly

Can you imagine how many people who were done having kids anyway would make 10K off of this?

Sounds like faux knowledge among commoners to me. Provide your link.

Can you imagine how many people who just sit on their arse popping out kids just to get more money a month? Who will then in turn spout out 3-6 more kids of their own? Yeah, it would be expensive up front but you'd be saving way more down the line.

Like I said, it was a random thought. Is it perfect? God no. But at what point do we finally say enough is enough and try to find another way?

Unfortunate statistics, but true. People making under $10,000 a year have a higher birthrate than all other income groups by a relatively substantial margin.

I wouldn't blame the social safety net, though.

You brought numbers and Rex ran away.... Color me shocked. So now that we have numbers, Rex, how do you think we should tackle this out of control birthrate amongst the poor?

yeah most smart people make sure they can afford children and raise them and have them accordingly

poor uneducated just have them at no consequence and know they will get paid and don't give a shite if they have a nickel to support them

You don't think the social safety net is an incentive for folks to have children, and to do whatever is necessary to maximize benefits?

You're giving them too much credit.. Do I want 10k cold hard cash now? Or have to deal with kids and only get a little at a time?

The give me crowd isn't a long term thinking crowd. All they care about is now. More short sighted than my 90 year old grandma.

Rex you either have to be completely blind and oblivious to the world around you or just plain stupid to not see that the poor reproduce at a higher rate than rich and affluent people. The only major middle class group that reproduces in high numbers these days are Mormons and occasionally Catholics.

Unfortunately, no one will actually try to give a solution to the problem. The welfare state is what will bring this country down. It'll only grow exponentially unless changes are made.

Sure we might take a hit at first but the long term benefits are huge.. If we can convince even half to take the 10K cash to get sterilized, then think of the savings down the road.

Well, there is also incentive for me in the tax forms to have children, you know? With exemptions and all.

I will readily admit I do not know how all of the programs work. Are food stamps and TANF paid out on a per child basis? Does each additional child give you an equal amount of money?

I think there is a societal/culture issue in poorer neighborhoods. I do not think that people have children just for additional benefits. I seriously doubt that the sum of the social safety net makes it a net positive to have another child.

Not only that, but the bottom two income levels handily "out-birth" all higher income levels by a very healthy margin.

I'm sure the response to your post will be something about the reliability of your source, rather than actually addressing the problem though.

Can't vouch for the website I got it from (though it wasn't from an anti-welfare website or anything). It was just the first thing that popped up when I googled it.

I just posted it because the OP refused to do it. I'm sick of threads turning into stupid arguments because the OP doesn't back up his or her own point.
