Anybody ever have to deal with two parents with Alzheimer's at the same time?

Dear Lord man. No. My grandfather had it and it was awful. Sorry you are going through this. Hang in there. I think you are wise to seek out some advice and help.

Wow if you can't do round the clock care through family or a sitter, a nursing home may be your best bet

Sorry to hear

Yes, it is quite challenging to say the least. My dad is worse off than my mother, and my mother still knows enough to know that something bad is happening to her but she is not sure what it is. This is very sad as both of them are in very good physical condition. 86 and 88 yrs. old.

Pretty much every woman on my mom's side of the family has had it this far so I've watched my great grandmother and grandmother go through it. I pray it skips my mom. It's tough.

I couldn't imagine two parents at the same time. If that is your situation, I sincerely pray for you and them

I know it is tough, but do have some peace in that they got to live a full life. 86-88 is above the average life span.

My grandfather had early onset in his mid 60s.

Sucks.
Good luck.

This is a very cruel disease. I am very glad that I have had this much time with them. They could live another 5 years like this. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and lived until 103 but had no quality of life for the last 8 years.

Yeah SAL...going through it right now with my in-laws, although FIL is more dementia than Alzheimers. Many days, wish he had Alzhemiers, might be easier on the wife. We took away his car and he calls bitching about it every 5-10 minutes screaming we stole his car, money, etc. MIL is 85 and FIL is 84. Told my wife the worst thing both are excellent health, so we facing another 9-10 years of this.

Have around the clock care at home, but GD, that is costing a fortune. Of course, they have no retirement, no savings, etc. So, u know who is footing the bill

Not my parents but my aunt and uncle both had it at the same time. Fortunately, they had the financial wear-with-all to have great care. But my final visit to see them was one of the most difficult days of my life.
Good luck to you.

LC, dad is pretty passive at this point but my mom is paranoid and delusional. When we took my dad's car away a couple of years ago, he went ballistic for about a year. That was his last part of his independence and control. Very nasty experience.

I am very sorry for you and I wish you the best.

In January I found out from my son that his Mother (my ex wife) was diagnosed last year at the age of 60. I understand that people who are diagnosed at that age go downhill rapidly.

I feel badly for him. His folks moved to New Jersey and so while he pursues his Ph.D. at in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins, he travels to NJ every other weekend to see her while she will still recognize him. It is a horrible disease.

This disease is why I firmly believe in LTC insurance.

They are in a nursing home leaving together but I have just recently been informed that because of their cognitive problems, they need much more care each and will have to be split up into two different rooms. I visit several times a week and can see the rapid decline in their mental condition. I am not sure the split will help anything. They will soon run out of their money and 24/7 help will be very draining.
I can tell everyone out there, if you can afford long term health insurance, buy it now.

I used to sell it.

I'd sell the home health care option like it was going out of style.

If you quality financially and health wise it's a no brainer when you enter retirement .
