I didn't realize Guardado was a left back. He always plays wing against the US, and that's the only time I see him.

He has some unresolved issues with the FA that started with him being banned for having a party.
It snowballed during Chepo de la Torre's tenure. IIRC, Chepo's brother is an executive in their federation.
But basically, he got banned, started getting pissed, and stopped giving a frick about the national team which became especially pronounced when he started playing really well. It's something that has festered over time. People expected him to come back after Chepo was fired.
