Apple is reportedly negotiating the purchase of Beats for $3.2 billion, according to a new report from The Financial Times. The deal would include both the streaming Beats Music service, as well as the part of the company that produces headphones and speakers.

The move, which would be Apple's largest acquisition ever, could be announced as soon as next week, the paper says. Citing sources, Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and Recode also confirmed that the deal was nearing.

They're already overpriced, can't wait to see how high they get when Apple buys them.

Are they trying to get a hold on the urban market?

I doubt Apple has any interest in the speakers or headphones - they're going after the Beats streaming music service.

The concept of downloading music is becoming antiquated. More individuals are subscribing to streaming services such as Spotify, Rdio, Google Music, and various others, as your entire music collection is available on any device with an internet connection.

As this trend continues, iTunes and iPods become increasingly irrelevant. Data connections are becoming pervasive, transferring music is cumbersome, and no one wants to pay for each and every song they download.

This purchase gives Apple an instant presence in this market.

Apple is said to be paying $3.2 billion dollars for the company, a sum that dwarfs the $404 million Apple spent to acquire NeXT in 1996, its largest purchase to date. As of its last earnings call, Apple had some $150 billion in cash on hand, plenty to cover the large acquisition.

In times like these when tech companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook seemingly drop a couple of billion dollars every other month to acquire yet another start-up, it is indeed surprising that Apple hasn't bought a company that costed them more than $400 million. If anybody has the cash lying around for M&As, it is them.

On a side note, Apple is already investing heavily in another area where no one else seems to be making any large scale investments at present - Sapphire Glass. This article talks about how Apple could be the sole beneficiary of this new era of sapphire manufacturing - Supply chained: Apple's sapphire production will be hard to copy. I think eventually every iPhone, iPad (and possibly Mac) screen will be made from Sapphire.

So Snapchat and Beats are worth the same amount? Give or take a couple hundred million dollars?
