Lillian Thuram lashes out over Spain's pervasive racism

Former Barcelona defender Lilian Thuram has told El Pais it is "a joke" the authorities fined Villarreal just 12,000 euros after a fan threw a banana at Dani Alves during a game, adding: "It shows they do not want to end racism."
Former France international Thuram said: "It is a joke to impose a 12,000 euro fine. It shows they do not want to end racism.
quote:
"In America, they take this seriously -- Donald Sterling was thrown out of the NBA. The referees must stop the game and the federation close the ground. The Spanish competition committee does not understand racism -- it is an act of violence against a player and against the people watching the game."

pretty different scenarios though. like Sterling, the dude that did that got banned for life. that's all clubs can really do to deter that kind of behavior. unfortunately, there's still going to be jackasses who did stuff like that. not sure fining a club huge bucks is particularly fair to them.

In Italy and Spain its more than that. Its the ultras who take up basically a whole end of the stadium and at some clubs have major influences.
Perfect example of the Ultras almost running the club was the Coppa Italia final last weekend.

yeah, it's a tough, much more complicated, scenario than the Sterling situation. to me, if you ban the person who committed the act, that should be a pretty strong deterrent. if you need to put CC cameras up to see who makes monkey sounds or says vile chants during the game, so that you can ban them, i'm all for that too. it just gets a little stickier when you've got a large cultural problem that you're putting the clubs on task to fix. they can do more to help, but large fines (particularly considering the economic weakness of most of the spanish clubs) seems harsh.

I think that's the exact attitude he's got a problem with.

Fining clubs really accomplishes little.
The people doing this may be fans of the team but they don't care if the club is fined or not.
In fact, regarding many Ultras' protests they specifically want the club to be fined to publicize whatever "stand" they are taking.
Furthermore, the gray area around the "offenses" for which these fines and emptied sections are enforced makes it ripe for abuse.
In Serie A, you have Roma getting an emptied section and heavy fine for some fans booing Balotelli but nothing when even more fans boo Cassano.
Was Balotelli booed due to racism? What about Cassano?
Were they booed because they're confrontational presences an not due to race?
Totti is booed every single away match. Is this discrimination against Romans?
Was Balotelli booed in England due to racism? I never heard the English press say that. . .
Or: Roma gets heavily fined/empty sections for some Ultras singing old songs degrading Napoli ("territorial discrimination") while Juve gets almost nothing for anti-semitic chants from some Ultras. . .
It's just a huge political mess when the governing body is making these calls about small groups or single fans.
The real solution is continued education, continued integration and time. That's why English fans no longer boo black players on their own sides and not due to fines or the mainstream press (which is mainly after the shift in public opinion has already taken place anyway).
On another note, the English press would be well put to worry more about the trash around their own back door. The majority of what I see there regarding Italy or Spain seems half-informed and always with a dose of holier than thou.

I like Thuram. I watched that Rise As One episode on the French team. He has been delving in this since his retirement, speaking out against prejudice in football. Good for him, more people in Europe need to step up and not allow this shite to happen. Im not saying we are perfect, but growing up people just saw a white southern male as a racist. Which isnt fair, especially if you were a soccer fan you realize it is way worse in every other part of the world. doesnt matter where you are from.

This is it in a nut shell.
Ban the hell out of these pieces of shite. But fining the club will accomplish absolutely nothing in regard to eradicating racism.

I can't believe this was 10 years ago but looks like nothing has changed.

I pretty much always take America's side over Europe in the debate about racism, but I'm not sure this is fair. I'm pretty sure the fan in question was banned for life. And I'm not sure an NBA team is fined if some random fan threw a banana onto the court.

The random fan being beaten to a pulp would probably be deterrent enough to keep it from happening again.

Probably so.

In the states it would be by the fans.
In an ultra section no one would give zero fricks. It would have to be the police btw Ultras hate the cops and would gladly take that fight on.

Exactly, the worst thing is to get police involved as that brings in a completely different layer of hostilities.
In his book, The Football Factory, John King does an excellent job of illuminating the thought process which informs much of the issues Ultras bring to the game.
An all too brief summation would be that often it's not as much racism etc at play as it is general anger, frustration ect translated into the desire to get a rise. The greater the taboo the more appetizing it becomes as a flashpoint over which to make a "stand".
Any "solution" that ignores this is designed for failure.

Alot of it is politically driven. Certain teams Ultras with certain political views. The ones that crack me up are the super conservative ones yet most of them are unemployed and leach of the government
