Panera replaces cashiers with kiosks
quote:
The soup and sandwich giant will be cutting down the number of cashiers in its new store design in attempt to fix its speed problems. The chain has faced criticism in the past over its slightly slower service in comparison to other fast food companies, so it was proposed to put the power of the order in the customer’s hands. Panera Chief Executive Ron Shaich said in an interview:
quote:
“The dirty little secret in the food industry is one in seven orders is wrong. We’re one in ten, a little better than average. Half of those inaccuracies happen during order input.”

But the few minimum wage employees left will be making $20/hour!!!

Whole Foods has that arrangement in many of its stores.
WaWa convenience stores in Virginia has a similar arrangement, but one cashier for four order input screens.
It all works. If there's an error it's the customer's fault.

Yep. And everyone knows this was going to happen. They are doing everything can to make below average workers obsolete.

Been saying this for a while. Promote unskilled workers to come into this country and raise the minimum wage at the same time iPads start taking orders at fast food joints.
It is just stupid.

What happens when computers and robots replace every blue collar job? 100 million people just supposed to not eat while the OT types call them lazy from their yachts? I'm just asking how the hand of the market will correct this?

don't count on this...with all the new regulations placed on farmers, producers, etc., prices aren't coming down anytime soon

We can just import it from other countries. The USDA and FDA doesn't regulate them nearly as much as our farmers.

That's a very important question... one for which Republicans, in particular, have no political answer except to let everybody starve.

But, seriously, I read an article several years ago that was a collection of writings through the years. It chronicled this exact sentiment at each step in 'progress' and / or automation.
'What will happen to all those blacksmiths and buggy whip manufacturing jobs if this "automobile fad" catches on, etc.'
It was a great piece.

These are minimum wage jobs. They're not long term solutions.

it actually can be explained very simply economically. When businesses become more efficient like they are in this example, it becomes more profitable to lower the prices because it will give them an edge over competitors. This measn customers will be buying the same products as before but they will be spending less, meaning that they will spend their extra dollars somewhere else creating aggregate demand growth in a new area. Ultimately creating new jobs. thats why in the last hundred years much more money has been spent on entertainment than before. because the costs of necessities has gone down to to technological advancements so people have more money to spend on leisure activities. Now a structural recession can occur after the technological advancement due to workers skills not matching with the skills demanded by employers, but the market will sort it out eventually
please ignore the spelling and grammar mistakes, Im tired

So how does increasing the cost of business to hire workers reduce unemployment? We shouldn't tie welfare to jobs. If society thinks people need some base level of money or wants to provide free housing, health care etc, then society should pay for it with various tax schemes. Then people can work at whatever wage they and their employer deem worthy. By increasing the costs to employ workers we are simply reducing the size of the workforce and reducing the size of our tax base to actually support social programs.
