The Right's next Brendan Eich; newspaper editor fired over anti-gay blog post

The Newton Daily News is seeking a new editor after parting ways with Bob Eschliman, its former editor.
Eschliman’s departure was announced Monday, nearly a week after he received statewide media attention for his personal blog addressing the Queen James translation of the Bible.
In his blog, Eschliman stated, “I’d like to talk a little bit about deceivers among us, most notably the LGBTQXYZ crowd and the Gaystapo effort to reword the Bible to make their sinful nature ‘right with God.’” He concluded his blog entry with, “If you ask me, it sounds like the Gaystapo is well on its way. We must fight back against the enemy.”
Daily News management learned of the blog posting last Tuesday afternoon and suspended Eschliman on Wednesday. He remained under suspension until Monday’s decision.
Daily News Publisher Dan Goetz said a search for a new editor would begin immediately.
“This was a very difficult situation,” Goetz said. “I cannot directly comment on a personnel matter. We are moving on.”
The Daily News is owned by Shaw Media, and a column from Shaw Media President John Rung appears on page 4A of today’s paper.
“Last week, Mr. Eschliman expressed an opinion on his personal blog that in no way reflects the opinion of the Newton Daily News or Shaw Media,” Rung stated. “While Mr. Eschliman is entitled to his opinion, his public airing of it compromised the reputation of this newspaper and his ability to lead it.”
Rung also stated, “Mr. Eschliman has a right to voice his opinion. And we have a right to select an editor who we believe best represents our company and best serves the interests of our readers.”
Eschliman had been employed at the Daily News since June 2012.

Why is Newton Daily News so damned intolerant?

I'm sure the right wing is probably happy to have another bigot hero to replace Cliven Bundy with, the Bundy thing is a bit old and hating gays it more popular than hating blacks.

Because they feel it may affect their bottom line.

His diaper looks to be just about full again.

Nothing like Eich, who simply gave money to a legitimate political campaign. Eich could very well be totally free of bias against homosexuals and still have given money to halt the redefinition of marriage.

I agree although I am a bit apprehensive about our society's recent push to severely punish thought.
It's quite Orwellian.

So he came out in favor of one version of the Bible? Who is to say one is right or wrong and which one? It's all in the translation anyway.
Is this a matter of prejudiced speech having consequences?

Hyperpartisan, media-saturated environment makes the actors in the marketplace of ideas incredibly responsive.

I can see where he would be mad with people over this.
But when you blog or twitter it has consequences.

Your such a bigot!

Unless I'm missing something in Eich's story, I don't see how these two developments are comparable. I don't think Eich ever went out of his way to be antagonistic or call anyone Gaystapo. He simply supported a political cause that he and a lot of other Americans agreed with. I think his ouster was pretty wrong-headed.
This guy clearly wanted to air out his negative views.

Intemperate remarks and probably symptomatic of a screw loose somewhere. Reminds me of a woman who used to answer the phones at the government office where I worked. She was on a mission from god to query each caller about whether they had accedpted jesus as their personal savior. They took her off the phones but IMO she should have been fired for being so stupid as to think she could get away with it.

I really think we should rethink the way we search out private behavior of individuals if it's not reflected in the way they do business. This is a very slippery slope. Fight those you disagree with by having open discussions away from the work site. Seeking to get people fired is wrong and will lead to a more segregated society.

You need to lookup the definition of bigot.
It should have a nice big ole picture of, well, any liberal. But let's just start with you... and Al Sharpton.
