Lots of prophetic gold in this article of what many of us have been saying regarding high taxation and its effect on job growth and jobs in general.

Oh yeah, nb4IBFreeman...

quote:

When Paul Audley took the job as president of FilmL.A. in late 2008, he was astounded to discover that physical production on the $70 million pic “Battle: Los Angeles” wasn’t being done in Los Angeles.

“It stunned me that the movie was shooting in Louisiana, and that the state of California was letting this happen,” he recalls.

quote:

To drive home the need for state support, attendees at a Feb. 22 rally in Burbank held by Hollywood unionists were handed petitions to send to Sacramento citing that only one of 41 big-budget feature films shot in 2012 and 2013 was shot entirely in California.

quote:

“We are going to stand with you to make sure Hollywood does not become Detroit,” she declared. “I’ll be damned if we’re going to stand by and see the last film industry worker here turn out the lights. Hell, no!”

Are big-budget movies ever shot entirely in one place?

You gotta be quick because you know his bat signal is blowing up. Although, it's a sort of cleverly disguised thread, I have no doubt he will be here shortly to set us all straight regardless.

No. I'm a Marine reservist. I was voluntold to be an extra. I got paid by the Marines for a drill weekend but not by the studio so I don't know if that counts.

I dunno but Hollywood used to be the movie capital of the world BUT the Kally-forn-AY-Aians in their infinite wisdom decided to start taxing the crap of the its producers(no pun intended).

From what I have read, the top 1% of Cally's pay well over HALF of Callys state taxes.

Only the first 30 extras used have to be SAG extras. Any number after that can be non-union.

So ... it's universally agreed now that Detroit has failed miserably due to unions and liberals/democrats, etc. ?

The most ironic aspect of that story is the person vowing that Hollywood won't become the next Detroit. The exact same liberal mindset that killed Detroit is in play here. 80% of those idiots voted for Obama twice, and probably don't have a clue why their cash cow has anthrax.

If you travel down the same road as Detroit, you end up like Detroit.

I'd be curious how many of these entertainers "live" in LA vs. own a production company in Buttcrack, Idaho and rent housing through that company which owns property as a depreciating asset.

freeman brings excellent arguments and necessary analysis about the prudent use of our tax dollars. I appreciate that. But, I pull against him, for selfish reasons, and hope I end up being right in the long term.

Things are happening here in Louisiana with the film industry's presence. Last week, there was a symposium to transform ULL's drama department into a major film school. There is now a special effects editing studio in Lafayette (whose other locations are in L.A. and Vancouver, CA). Film festivals in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, Shreveport and Lake Charles are seeing some success. The theatrical/performing and visual arts are enjoying an uptick in popularity.

The culture of Louisiana breeds a lot of natural character that could groom a wealth of artistic talent. I think a major film industry is a remarkable fit for New Orleans if it can grow roots beyond the shoot-and-leave dynamic. I will reserve judgement on whether ibfreeman is right that that this a huge waste of money or is a brilliant new investment. I, for one, hope strongly for the latter. Things are happening here, though, so fingers crossed.

True, but he has no objectivity. I still maintain the analysis he relies upon does not adequately measure collateral benefits to local economies today. As a small example, there are shops on Magazine St and elsewhere that see a significant increase in business when productions are underway. Things that you may not think about, like items for props, clothing, stationery, etc. I know owners that experience this regularly.

I think we've already seen investments in "brick and mortar" projects, so to speak. Soundstages, post production facilities, etc.

But, do you have your own IMDB profile?
If not, get on that.
