Rodon has been the consensus but he has not backed it up this year. His potential is certainly cloudier.

Aiken and Kolek seem to be the other two in the equation but high school arms are a longer term bet...doesn't seem to be an obvious top tier power bat...what say you astros fans?

Rodon threw in the mid 90's consistently in his last start, touching 97 at times. But threw 140 pitches, which is what he's been having to do a lot this year.

That's ridiculous. His coach should be ashamed of himself for riding a college arm this much.

Which is complete bull shite. Rodon should tell that coach to frick off.

I'd be lying if I said I knew anything more than what I posted -- I don't keep up with it that much.

Was reading Buster Olney this morning and that's where I got that.

He put a quote after it from an AL Scout that doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling with Rodon

My apologies, it was 131 not 140

quote:

The Wolfpack ace was particularly dominant early on; touching 97 mph with his fastball and striking out eight over the first three innings; but outside of the sixth, where he gave up three hits and the only run of the game, Rodon was outstanding, with several sliders that would grade 80 on the 20-80 scouting scale.

quote:

Rodon had an outrageously high pitch count, needing 131 pitches to get through the afternoon. That total means that Rodon has now thrown 379 pitches over his last three starts, and while the improved results have certainly gotten the notice of teams selecting early this June, the amount of stress N.C. State has put on his left arm hasn't gone unnoticed, either.

quote:

"Once again, a lot of positives and the huge negative [for Rodon]," an AL crosschecker said. "I love seeing that he held his velocity throughout the game; that was something we were concerned about as we hadn't seen it on a consistent basis. The command was better, and the slider was an unhittable pitch with two strikes. "But, the 131 pitches is the major takeaway from the evening. I realize N.C. State needs every win they can right now if they want to get into the tournament, but risking a kid's future is never worth it. This idea that these young pitchers can go 120-140 pitches because they have two extra days off is so excruciatingly inaccurate, but that's their thought process. I feel bad because it's the coaches who should be accountable, but it absolutely plays a factor in how we make decisions."

Especially when you consider he's done it for his whole college career. That's been a major red flag for me. He's obviously the most talented option but his decline in velocity early in the year is concerning. Good to hear he's back to the mid-upper 90's

Yep that is a red flag for sure. I think the scout is right on about him needing to keep his velocity late in the game.

These college coaches are out of control. Letting him throw 130+ pitches is crazy. He obviously will ride this kid's arm until it falls off as long as it furthers his career.

How has he not backed it up? He has 2.03 ERA, has 94 strike outs, 3 complete games, and has a .226 batting average against. His W-L column has to do with the quality of the team around him not his talent.

The Astros should go with Kolek IMO. If they dont' want to take a chance on a HS arm since it's extremely risky, I say go for the top prep bat in Alex Jackson. He won't stick at C most likely, but his bat speed is incredible. I'm not a big fan of Aiken since he's shooting above the other arms solely because he's left handed. Hoffman, Beede, and Kolek are all better than Aiken IMO.

so in short, either roll with Kolek the Texan or go with teh best bat in Jackson.

I am a very pro- go to college guy, but if my son was a solid MLB pitching prospect in HS I would advise him to go straight to the minors thru the draft. There are only so many pitches in the life of a pitchers arm.

Whcih means this is what will happen:

2014- Drafted. Pitches in low A for a few starts (2-3)

2015- TJ surgery

Carlos Rodon, he has been beasting it is his last couple of starts. Other than his idiot coaches making him throw to much

The Stros need someone closest to the majors, we don't need any high school 3 year projects at 1-1

Definitely. But, you hate to waste the top pick on a #3 arm. (I personally believe he could be a #2 like Jake Peavy)

To him. The coach wants to keep his job. I'm not saying it's right, but it is what it is.
