I'm of the opinion that getting deli meat sliced to order is clearly superior to the pre-packed crap. But man, it can really be a pain in the arse. Took me an extra 10-15 minutes just to get a pound of turkey the other day.

Are there any grocers that let you place your order ahead of time by phone or online and keep a running database of what's available?

I've had that issue too.
I'm pretty sure that some of the Rouse's have some already cut and packaged. Need to look into that.

I was wondering about something like that. I bet some of the places I shop sell a good bit of Boar's Head Ovengold Turkey each day, for example. Why not have a few pound bags ready to go?

I haven't seen any places in BR that do this.

Excellent thought. I love some fresh sliced deli meat, but the wait is absurd.

I'd like this too. I'm a nocturnal person. I shop pretty late. A lot of stores in BR close their deli area a few hours before the store itself closes.

Robert's in nola delivers for $20 and does personal shopping so it's ready when you get there for $10.

It's late April, turkey season just ended.
How come you did not kill, pluck, clean, cook & slice your own?

There is, and places like City Pork are finally giving that. Now, all we need is a City Beef, and City Poultry, and we're all set.

I did this about a month ago. First turkey I've ever killed.

They're big ain't they?!?

Useless trivia for the day:
Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the national bird.

Any home delivery services in your area? I have used fresh direct exclusively for grocery shopping for the past year or so. I tell them what deli meats I want and they come delivered with the rest of the groceries.

It was a Tom about 14 pounds and I roasted it kind of slow with some moisture in the bottom of the pan and it came out great.

I do like the Boars Head turkey.

Yes, this is an issue too.

Another problem sometimes is the deli worker not having any clue about their inventory. There is one place I've been where they have a big board that lists their stuff and it is a nice mix of items. The problem is that it seems like every time I order something off the beaten path, the guy spends several minutes looking for it just to come back and tell me that they are out of it.

Also, I'd like to have awareness of the sell-by date when I order stuff. I hate buying a pound and a half turkey and then finding out that the sell-by is today.

I haven't bought any meats to-go from there yet. Big fan of their sandwiches though.

Any recommendations?

When I have time on my hands, which is not very often, I'll put a turkey breast in the smoker along with whatever else I'm smoking.

Take an electric knife to it, vacuum seal a few packages and chunk them in the deep freeze.

Same applies to hams or roasts.

That sounds too OT-baller for me.

Last time I was at rouses at the deli counter, a Big Mama in a motorized cart and with 5 lil ones made the poor deli girl give her samples of no less than 7 deli meats :suicide:
