I've had bad anxiety and depression as of late. I've dealt with some terrible things as an early teen, but I've managed to cope well for the most part, especially with what I had to deal with. I do know that life has its ups and downs. Recently I've become so down on myself with school, and life in general, and just being really unhappy. I'd never think about suicide or anything like that because I've witnessed first hand what it does to a family and loved ones. It's just a huge funk I'm desperately trying to get out of that has snowballed on me.

I've been able to cope with going through slumps, etc. But lately I've been so down on myself, and just completely out of it. I'm basically just miserable to be around lately, and completely negative. That's not really me. It has affected my school work this semester. It has affected my confidence. I've possibly ruined a relationship with a great girl because of it, with constant fighting and me probably being unbearable. I'm seeking help (will start seeing a therapist next week) for this for me most importantly, and also for those that have to be around me. My doctor prescribed me to a lower dosage of Zoloft (it's the generic version if that matters) today to start off with, just 25mg for now.

I've researched it a bit and read that it works on most, but can give me side effects such as lack of sex drive (which would be awful and cause problems). I'd absolutely like to work on this on my own without medication and possibly just seeing a therapist, but if this is a safe alternate for now, and not too harmful, I am fine taking it. If this will destroy my sex drive and possibly have other terrible side effects then I'd like to stay away.

Anyone on here have any experience with using Zoloft?

Advice or any other remedies would be greatly appreciated as well.

TLDR version:
Taking zoloft, will it help with anxiety and depression? Experiences using it, or someone you know using it? Will I have bad side effects like loss of sex drive?

Zoloft didn't help me at all but it did cause the sexual side effect so I know it was working. Be sure to be in contact with your prescribing physician to manage dosage because a seemingly minute difference can make you feel totally different.

I've never taken any anti-depressants but I have seen Zoloft work wonders with some of my loved ones.

You've done all the right things so far. Going to a therapist will help tons. Depression meds are trial and error for the most part. You just have to start taking it and report back to your doctor any negative side effects or if you don't think it's working at all. That's when you'll try out the next one.

Did they ever mention it causing problems with their sex drive? If it's helping with my current state of depression that's great, but taking away my sex drive will cause other problems.

I'm 24, I certainly don't want to have problems with shite like that. It is a pretty low dosage, but reading about people having problems in their sex life is scaring me a bit.

I did go to the doctor, and he put me on it. I'm just trying to see the experiences of others while taking this. If it helped, if it didn't.

It's hard to go off of. Everyone is different on it. AD's are like that. You may have to go through a couple before you find the right one. Go to a psych doctor or psych nurse practitioner instead of a GP. They have 2 totally different philosophies on diagnosing mental issues. As well as what to prescribe. Do the therapy. It's worth it. It may be as simple as changing a routine. Try a few things before you resort to meds. Hope you get better.

I was on Zoloft for a year. Like others have said... Hard to get off. That isn't always a bad thing. I was much more mellow. I also lost a bit of weight. All in all a positive experience.

I was about your age, and it did not diminish my sex drive at all. It did, however, make orgasm very difficult. Honestly, though, overcoming that was pretty fun and actually kinda awesome (with the right girl). After that, it wasn't a major problem, but your milage may vary. Know that that side effect is legit, and since it sounds like a major concern for you, you should probably ask your doctor about other meds that don't carry that risk.

Worst side effect wound up being excessive sweating, which seemed to linger long after I quit taking it.

Zoloft helped my quite a bit. There are sexual side effects.

ETA: Haven't had to take it in many years. I hope you get some relief.

I already take a while to finish, at times it takes a really long time, but maybe that's due to masturbation as well.

Even with a low dosage like I'm on it will likely effect that? That doesn't sound good at all if so.

Everyone is different, so there is only one way to know for sure. I don't remember what dose I was on. It was very frustrating for a while, but frankly, overcoming that was one of the greatest moments of pleasure ever and my girl was very proud of herself. :)

I didn't have any problems quitting, and the sexual side effects disappeared quickly, IIRC, so I wouldn't worry about permanent damage. The sweating became too much to bear.

Zoloft does cause one to struggle "finishing". Ssri's work great and you should take it if it's prescribed to you.

Zoloft is actually used in some people for premature ejaculations

That's the sexual side effect that I experienced. I haven't taken any anti-depressants in more than 15 years, so it worked for me. Take the meds, Coco, you deserve to feel better.

The sexual side effects don't seem nearly as major as the untreated depression issue.

I wouldn't worry about some temporary, minor sexual side effects. Worry about getting yourself back to a healthy place for now.

I haven't taken zoloft, but I do know that it has made a world of difference in a couple of folks that I know...

fwiw, I don't see how you could have side effects that are worse than what you are experiencing right now from being depressed...take that shite and don't look back...

But will I become dependent on this, and have to keep upping the dosage?

I really do not want to be dependent on any kind of medication. I'm hoping this only has to be temporary, and naturally the thought of these side effects with it scares the frick out of me. Having to up the dosage because of a possible dependency on the medication would only worsen the potential side effects.

those that I know who take anti depressants do not have to keep upping the dosage...in fact, a number of them have just used them to get through a rough patch and then gradually weaned themself off several months later...

I personally think that the benefits outweigh the negatives even if you need to stay on them long term....
