This morning's catch

Water is getting clear so we are going to be setting out some minnow jug traps and switch from soap pretty soon.

Damit, have to miss this cam trip this weekend bc of finals. Have been wanting to try out the soap as bait. Do you use it year around or just around spring time?

Go look up the process of saponification and then remember back to the Ivory catch phrase.

Amite River.

Ivory soap cut into cubes. We've always run the lines starting in Spring through the summer. The soap works best in murky water. Once it clears up you can still use it at night but we generally switch to shiners.

The best thing about soap though is that it only catches catfish. No gue, eels, or turtles. Plus it's nice to be able to wash your hands with the bait when you're done.

Catfish often live in murky, muddy water, so catfish locate food by smell. That's why most commercial catfish baits smell like blood or rotten cheese.

I've heard of using ivory but don't understand how it doesn't break when you run a hook in it.

After this thread i googled soap baits and i might have to try and make some homemade soap. I think if you added that vietnamese fish sauce to the soap it would work even better. Evidently it is the animal fats in the soap that attract the fish.

Well I can assure you that it will stay on the hook. After it's been in the water a bit the soap softens up and kinda molds onto the hook. Try using smaller hooks if you are having problems with the pieces breaking up.

We used to use a brand called "White Magic Soap Bait Co.", and it worked great. I've never had much luck with plain old ivory soap.

Always had better luck with zote. Only on trotlines though.

Where do you run lines at? We have a dock right off Idle Hour road just before Big Johns if you're coming from Fred's. We wakeskate out there a lot.

We usually put in at Fred's and run up river a bit until we start seeing a bunch of obstructions and trees sticking out of the water. That generally keeps the water sports peeps down to a minimum.
