media today is more entertainment than facts

quote:

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lamented the state of journalism on Wednesday, telling an audience at the University of Connecticut that journalism is now driven more by entertainment than fact based reporting.

Clinton, who has been the focus of national media attention since the early 1990s, told the 2,300-person audience that "journalism has changed quite a bit in a way that is not good for the country and not good for journalism."

Yes, let's ignore the dozens of publications and web sites that do in-depth reporting.

quote:

"A lot of serious news reporting has become more entertainment driven and more opinion-driven as opposed to factual," she said. "People book onto the shows, political figures, commentators who will be controversial who will be provocative because it’s a good show. You might not learn anything but you might be entertained and I think that’s just become an unfortunate pattern that I wish could be broken."

This is laughably ironic. Enjoy your upcoming book tour, Hillary, where you're sure to be on every news program that will have you. I guess the difference is, much like all liberals' chastising of people, is it's only wrong when others do it .. you're obviously the moral superior.

quote:

The former secretary of state went on to say that she feels there is a space for "explanatory journalism because there’s a lot going on in the world that needs explanation."

The poor dumb citizenry needs to be coddled by Mother Hillary :/

quote:

The former first lady also had a tip for journalists: Do your homework.

"It’s important for journalists to realize that they have to do their homework too and they really should be well-prepared when they interview people, when they talk about issues," she said. "I think that it’s with professional tweaking and creativity we could address some of the issues we know are plaguing journalism today?."

That's a nice not so subtle "warning" to anyone who wants an interview with her as she gears up for 2016 that challenging questions won't be tolerated and the interview will be on her terms. I guess that's "journalism" to Hillary.

quote:

In response to her remarks, Tim Miller, executive director of American Rising PAC, a conservative research and media super PAC, said Clinton's problem with the media stemmed from "a lack of interest in transparency, not the media. She's never going to like anyone that tries to hold her accountable."

At least CNN gave some time towards the end of the article to somebody with a spine.

What in the actual frick is anyone that's ever been associated with the Obama administration doing bitching about the media?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

No, she is entirely correct. She plays the media game as well as anyone, of course, but she wouldn't be able to do this unless she understood the realities of how the game is played.

Translation: the news media is still not lock-step in bed with the liberal progressive Dem agenda to suit us. No more questions about fake scandals.

I don't like Hilary, but she isn't wrong.

Yes she is. She needs to qualify her statements. Yes, yahoo and cnn and msnbc and the like pander to the TMZ type crowd, but that's to be expected .. companies in the business of making money giving viewers and readers the content they want, in order to drive ratings and make money.

There's tons of "real journalism" out there, Hillary just doesn't think the average American is smart enough to seek it out.

If it weren't for the 'current state of the media', Bill, Hilary, and Obama would not be politically viable. Stupid bitch.

Hillary sure has a lot nerve. She has been lying to the public for years and has used and manipulated the media for just as long. She conveniently claimed it was a "right wing conspiracy" because Bill couldn't keep his pecker in his pants. Next to Obama, Hillary is the most overrated politician of all time.

Some people seem to be using this as an opportunity to engage in cheap Clinton bashing.

In fact if you were to ask George Bush, Dick Cheney, Mitt Rommey, Rand Paul or any right wing politicians how they feel....I would bet they would agree with 99% of what Hillary is saying here. That things are over simplified, ratings driven, etc.

Hard to argue with that in terms of the mainstream media like CNN, MSNBC, Fox, etc.

She specifically chided "journalism." I think anyone with half a fricking brain will admit to the fact that those cable news stations aren't practicing journalism. They're "entertainment news."

But most people think that is what journalism is (and that was Hillarys point).

This is one of the few times Hillary and I will agree on anything but she is correct. There are very few actual journalist left in the public in the US. The reporters of today only know what the teleprompter tells them and rarely bother with learning about a subject before spouting off. Her claim that the news is opinion driven instead of factual is about as spot on as possible.
All this being said, she has helped abuse and shape this more than most and can rot her no good lying arse in hell.

Nah, they really don't. I understand it's a semantical argument .. but do a quick survey of your friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances. Ask them if Fox News and CNN talking heads are "journalists." I've got a thousand bucks says they'll say no.

The fact that you have to predicate your post with this is rather defensive, and shows me you probably have no clue what you're talking about.

And yes! I was right! ..

Turn off the television and pick up a fricking newspaper or magazine. Just because you don't consume something doesn't mean it's nonexistent. There is more indepth, actual journalism today than in all of history. Don't damn the industry just because you're too base to seek out anything other than cable TV.

I agree with her on much of this. Certainly not all of it, and bit she raises some valid points about the current state of the farce that has become of "journalism".

Root cause here, are viewers. They watch it. They crave it. Everyone b*tches about the quality of news, but "hard news" has been a complete economic loser for some time.
