What a reasonable charge for a large stump?

Not sure. All I know is I cashed a $97k check for a stump grinder after Hurricane Katrina. Dude put the money in a black duffel bag that had two pistols in it. Said he was driving back to Georgia.

Depends on your definition of large but 3ft diameter or less should be about $100. 3-5ft somewhere between $100-$200.

That day was crazy. He did it on a Friday too. It was a lot of money.

Drill holes in it and pour buttermilk in the holes.

Pie-slice cut the top with a chainsaw, set a fire on top like a Swedish Torch.
Stump and all roots will be gone...no mess and no issue of the stump area collapsing 5 years later when the roots finally rot.
Best of all, it's free.
