I have to rent a tux for a black tie wedding. Are cummerbunds are no-no in this day and age?

That would look like youre trying to upstage the Groom i think
Just go simple

How upscale is this thing? I would highly suggest wearing one, regardless

No. They (or a waistcoast) are still a part of traditional black tie.

chances are it's going to be a crappy polyester tux, so I would not worry about the cummerbund so much.

No they are not a no-no.
Just wear it right. Pleats facing up. Covering the beltline.

That's so it catches your crumbs... that's why its called a crumberbun.

Well it's black-tie which I thought was odd because I don't expect it to be too upscale. But I'm not sure. I just figured it was upscale since it's black-tie.

I would buy a tux, but I'm in the middle of losing some weight. That's another thing: since I've got some bulge around the middle, I feel like a cummerbund will look like a rubberband about to pop.
Would a vest work just as well as a cummerbund?

I do when conducting the orchestra.

This. By the way, black tie means black tie...not neon pink or green.

Thanks...
I think they are fine. I have a tux, and it came with a black bow tie and crumberbun, then someone gave a me a silver and red bow tie/cumberbun set.
I also bought a standard vest and bowtie.
I vary it up and wear different ones for different things.
