Both are good. The Brosnan/Russo version is better in my opinion.

I really enjoyed the Brosnan version. I think this movie may have gotten some hate when it came out because people were expecting a James Bond movie.

I'm going to check it out sometime. I've heard it's underrated a couple of times now. Just haven't gotten around to seeing it.

I agree that this is the rare case where the remake is slightly better than the original.

The briefcase automatically cracks the frame and then rolls the canvas so as not to crease it. Then you just remount the canvas on a new frame. Very doable.

Considering canvases are stretched and stapled over stretcher bars, this is not very doable. If you cracked the bars and rolled the canvas, it would be like a limb having an open fracture.

From what I can see, he pulls the picture out of the frame and then folds it in the briefcase. I still don't get how that is done without ripping the damn thing though.

From IMDB:

The film originally showed Crown breaking the backing of the Claude Monet painting in order to fit it into his briefcase. However, John McTiernan later decided that audiences might be put off if they saw him in some way damage the painting, so he edited the scene so that it only showed Crown putting the folded painting into his briefcase, and figured most people wouldn't catch on to the fact that the briefcase was half the size of the painting.
