Growing up on the Mobile Bay area we used to catch these all the time. Our parents would wake us up at like 3 AM and bring us down to the bay to catch as much seafood as possible. As I grew older I found out that is actually a natural phenomenon and only occurs in a few places around the world. I've heard it happens in Tokyo Bay in Japan but I couldn't find many articles about it.

For those who do not know what a jubilee is:
quote:

During a jubilee many species of crab and shrimp, as well as flounder, eels, and other demersal fish will leave deeper waters and swarm—in large numbers and very high density—in a specific, shallower coastal area of the bay. After researching the oral histories and journalistic records of past jubilees, measuring physical and meteorologic conditions, and taking biological and chemical measurements, Loesch concluded that accumulated organic material on the bay floor could, under a certain set of conditions, result in a rapid depletion of oxygen (hypoxia) in parts of the bay, driving fish to the surface seeking oxygenated water

They can only occur on certain conditions:

quote:

They usually only occur in the summer, usually in the morning before sunrise. The previous day’s weather conditions must include an overcast or cloudy day, a gentle wind from the east, and a calm and slick bay surface. Also, a rising tide is necessary; a change to a falling tide will stop the jubilee. It takes a combination of all these conditions to produce the phenomenon.

If you ever get a chance, even though your chances are slim, I definitely recommend experiencing one.

Had a jubilee once in 7th grade. Teacher said a test didn't count.

My FIL had a bay house and would tell stories of them. I thought he was fricking with me the first couple of times he told the stories...

And I've talked about this frequently with my customers over in Mobile. Quite a few of them have experienced it and said it is absolutely amazing.

They do sound pretty bizarre. Within an hour of them happening the shore would be flooded with locals scooping up crap, flounder, and all kinds of stuff by the bucket load.

I've never ventured over there. Not sure I want to pop that cherry just yet

I've heard of this but never fortunate to see one first hand. I would definitely be calling in sick to work that day.

It would be pretty lucky for an out-of-towner to just so happened to experience one while they were in the area. Given that I lived there for 18 years, I've seen a few.

I had never heard about this until we stayed at the Grand Hotel on the Mobile Bay last summer. Ended up reading about it in a book a the hotel and then heard one of the local yahoos thinking the conditions were looking favorable for jubilee.

Seems like it would be a kick arse situation to find yourself in.

Pops worked here forever. I was basically raised on the grounds.

That should be like a snow day. Nobody should be expected to show up for work.

"Yeah, sorry John. I can't make it in to work today because of the crabs and flounder on the roads which are making them impassable. See you tomorrow. I'm on my way to get a new propane tank."

As in the black guy that worked there for like 50 years? That is cool as all hell if that is your pops.

I know it is a corporate fun facility now, but as I walked the grounds, read the plaques, and viewed the photos around that whole property, I couldn't help but think about the history of that place.

It had a really neat vibe to it.

Nah that's not my dad. I knew him very well though. I'm not sure if its still there but if you go by the Birdcage Lounge (might have changed names) it has a list of all the nicknames he gave the staff. My dad is on there so whenever he would see me he would call me Lil *insertnickname*
